Oatmeal Fruit Cookie Mix in a Jar

I’m still on the cookie mix quest. I went to one of the links I listed in my “Cookies in a Jar” post, and tried the Oatmeal Fruit Cookie Mix in a Jar recipe.

I really liked the looks of this recipe since it had oatmeal, wheat germ, golden raisins, dried cherries and coconut in it! Talk about plenty of fiber and vitamins! It is practically health food (well, that may be stretching it a bit).

I did have to make a few subsitutions. I used regular raisins, and dried sweetened cranberries. Oh, and believe it or not I was out of white flour, and when I went to the shop in town here that sells bulk food to buy the cranberries (they were out of cherries), butterscotch chips etc (for other recipes) I totally forgot to buy the flour. So I used wheat flour and they came out great! Score more on the fiber front.

Oh, and as a side note, I usually hate running out to buy just one ingredient to make something, but even if I had planned ahead, this little store that is literally 5 min from the house is where I would have gone for the cranberries anyway-they are a gift shop with a good sized bulk food section that runs about equal to the Mennonite bulk food store that is 15 min away (of course, the Mennonite store is much larger therefore carrying a wider selection of stuff).

The cookie dough came out sort of crumbly. I had to squeeze them into balls and then flatten them on the cookie sheet. Then again, I couldn’t find my 1/4 cup measuring cup (3 sets of measuring cups and all of them are missing the 1/4 cup-what do I do? Eat them?) so I guestimated the amount of milk by eyeballing 1/2 of a 1/2 cup. So that may have been my fault. Next time I’ll add more milk a little at a time till I get a bit wetter consistency. And the cooking time was the full 15 min (from the 10 – 15 min range given).

The verdict on the cookies? They are totally yummy! Wait, I’ll give that a double exclamation point!! Sort of like a granola cookie, or trail mix cookie. YUM!

I didn’t actually put the stuff into a jar, but with the various colors of the ngredients (white sugar, brown sugar, dried cranberries, golden or reg raisins, coconut, flour etc) it should make a very pretty layered jar.

I gorged on oatmeal cookies when I visited my mom in Ohio. I don’t make them (I have no idea why) but boy, are they good! Getting a jar like this will be a treat for any friend! Hey, thanks for asking about the popcorn cake. It’s just a popcorn ball recipe pushed into a butter 9×13 pan and popped out again. You can cut it, but it’s easier to just break pieces off. It’s almost gone now.
