Halloween Cupcakes

I was asked to make 24 cupcakes for Princess’s kindergarten party.

I used a box of Christmas funfetti cake mix I had bought on sale last January at Aldi’s ($.49) , 3 eggs (a dozen eggs at Aldi’s cost $.89, so that’s about $.08 an egg giving me $.24) some oil (had on hand, no idea of cost), a container of frosting from the dollar store that I’ve had in the cupboard forever ($1) *note, I usually make my own but didn’t feel up to it), black and orange dusting sugar(bought 1 jar each at the dollar store for $2 but only used a fraction of each-can continue to use for Harley themed stuff for DH or just save till next year-it isn’t as if sugar goes bad. Lets call the cost $. 25 for what was actually used) and plastic rings from the dollar store stuck in the top for decoration (5o skull, spider and bat rings for $1, cost for 24 cupcakes would be $.48).

Total cost of my contribution to the party: $2.48

Even if you figured that I couldn’t reuse the sugar and the rings, and thus included the total cost of those items, I’m still at $4.73 (unless my math is totally off, which it may be at 8:15 am.). I’ll have to check the price on 24 cupcakes next time I go to the big grocery store (Aldi’s and Save A Lot don’t have a bakery section) and compare. I think I did pretty good, and the kiddos liked them.

I love the idea of rings as cupcake decorations. Did you happen to take a picture of the finished product?

I didn’t take a picture, but Cici was up so she may have a shot with them in it. They didn’t exactly look Martha Stewart or anything, but they were cute.

I actually liked the fact that they were fairly small cupcakes-I used the one box of mix to make 24-with all the sugar around on Halloween, I figured they didn’t really need a huge cupcake with tons of frosting on top!
