Unusual Ways to Use Your Grill

On Friday I talked about several ways to beat the heat while cooking, both saving on electricity (which is always frugal) and just plain keeping cool during the summer.

While researching some of the information on using your grill to cook with, I found some neat and unusual ways to use your grill.

Fiesta Grill corporate site has a recipe section including this recipe for making beans in your iron skillet on the grill . How about a recipe to “fry” fish on the grill using potato flakes and tinfoil? Or make Nachos?

They even have recipes for baking on your grill. Apparently having your propane grill on “low” and preheated for about 10 minutes is the equivalent of an oven on 350 degrees-but you have to keep an eye on the time if you are adapting a recipe of your own as it can cook much faster. On the site there are recipes for strawberry muffins and banana bread believe it or not! I wonder if you could bake cookies? I love baking but hate heating up the house in the summer.

About.com has some great grilling articles on their BBQ and Grilling site such as “Grilling Pizza-You’ll never order another Pizza”. Yankee Bill and I did this at the campsite with our friends Amy and CSM B last summer. It was yummy with a smokey fire baked oven taste-that is after the first “test” one that was sort of mangled and not quite cooked. I think that smaller is better here-we tried to make them the size of the grill, and it was difficult to move. “Personal” sized would cook more evenly and be easier to remove in a single piece.

And you don’t have to give up on baking bread just because it’s summer, you can bake bread on your grill! This sounds like another thing that I have to try. Apparently you need to keep quite a close eye on it-the heat is higher and so it cooks up to twice as fast. For a slightly different set of directions on the bread baking, check out this article at The Prepared Pantry How to Bake Bread on a Grill.

And if you are a more visual person, at the Kraft site there is an entire section on videos down at the bottom of the page on specific recipes like the Grilled Pizza .
