Homemade Iced Coffee

Here is a quick and easy money saving idea for you. Want to enjoy an iced coffee but hate paying those coffee shop prices? Well never fear! Frugal Upstate is here to help.
Iced coffee is incredibly easy to make at home-it really is just ice & your coffee.
Seriously.
In the summer I frequently make a pot of coffee larger than what I expect to drink in the morning. In the afternoon I take one of my tall drinking glasses, fill it with ice, toss in my splenda and half & half, then pour the coffee on top. Stir with a chopstick-Viola!
I do find that I like much more milk or half & half in my iced coffee than I take in my regular coffee. Not really sure why that is. Experiment with yours to see.

I’ve never made it that way myself-in fact I only found the recipe while searching on Flickr for an appropriate iced coffee picture (that’s hers above-love folks who do creative commons copyright on their photos). I will be trying it this weekend though!

I saw your tweet and ran over. First of all, LOVE your new blog layout! Lovely!! Second, I couldn’t agree more! I try to make extra coffee so I can have a little pick-me-up midday. Those flavored syrups are great to have on hand too and sometimes I use skim milk with a glug of fat-free vanilla creamer to mimic that full-fat taste. I know, glug is very scientific

Thanks so much Amy! And you make a good point about the flavored syrups. I have some of the Sugar Free Raspberry & Sugar Free Caramel. While they might not be bargain basement frugality-they really are a very small, affordable luxury. And it is STILL way less expensive than buying the same flavored coffee at a shop.
Sounds yummy! I think I would make some coffee cubes to go in this instead of using regular ice cubes, however. I don’t like watered-down coffee. I love the new layout, btw!

I drink mine fast enough that the water issue isn’t too bad most of the time.

I get my flavored syrups at discount stores (like Marshall’s, Big Lots) much cheaper than at the grocery store… and if you use them, well, it’s still less expensive than getting your fancy beverage at Starbucks.
For sugar-eaters, sweetened condensed milk is also an affordable way to get your cream & sugar. When I lived in South Florida that’s how the old timers made the BEST cafe con leche. Iced is yummy, too.

and you want to know the weird part? I’ve never considered making my own at home. (crazy, I know). So I’m definitely going to give this a try so as to save myself a couple of bucks each week.
That’s the way a lot of frugal ideas are-you sort of slap yourself on the forehead and say “geez-I never thought of that!”
The Keurig you are currently reviewing has an iced drink setting. When you select this setting it makes the coffee extra strong (only about 1/4 cup I believe)so it is more like a shot of espresso that the expensive coffee chains use in their iced drinks. Then you add ice and milk, flavored syrup if you choose, and you instantly have a delicious iced beverage – not watery at all. Fast, yummy and saves a ton of money over purchasing a $4.00 iced mocha!
You know, that wasn’t very clear in the directions to the Keurig. Thanks so much for letting me know Sheila! That’s the only thing I missed about not using the big pot anymore-I didn’t have any leftover coffee to make iced coffee with. . .
