Well what do you know? Martha Stewart actually has an easy, frugal idea for making your own re-useable shopping bag from old T-shirts. I know I have plenty of old T-shirts that I’ve collected from who knows where piled up in my closet-it would be simplicity itself to whip up some of these:

Martha Stewart: Good Thing-T Shirt Bag

Honestly-this project only requires cutting and 1 seam! Quick, easy, fun, frugal and even green~what more could you ask for?

I’ll admit, I like the simplicity of this idea, but I doubt it would really be heavy-duty enough for me.

I made all my own grocery bags using wal-mart fabric and the instructions found at the Morsbags website.

    Jenn,
I’ve actually gone bagless. Couple of weeks ago at Aldi’s a older gentle men just left with his purchases. I was curious, as I am bagging furiously, so I watched him. When I went out to the parking lot I saw he was loading his goods right into laundry basket containers. So I decided to go over a talk to him. He actually had two large containers with a cooler in between them in the back part of his van. I asked if he took the time to measure them to see if they would fit, “No, they just fit, been doin this for a while, and I use a dolly to bring them into the house, if they are to heavy for me”. I thanked him for the great idea. Well I tried it and it worked great. I did use two bags one for bread the other for chips and such.
The best part is that I stopped at my Aunts house before my trip and she gave me a collapseable bin that she bought at bed, bath and beyond. So for a family of eight you need about three bins and two bags. The two bags I used were canvas bags that I own. Thanks for helping me be frugal and mindful.

Emily-Hmmm. The only part where I’d be concerned about strength would be the bottom seam. I think that if a person made a french seam or somehow reinforced it, then it would work well.

ddm-That’s a neat idea! I do use laundry baskets instead of suitcases when we travel in the car. I think that it might be a bit heavy for me though filled with canned veggies and such.

mercy maid & It’s all good-glad that you like the idea!
