The Diaper Cake

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on March 15, 2006

I mentioned a while ago that I was helping to organize my SIL’s baby shower. One of my planned gifts/decorations was a diaper cake. Well, I finally made it yesterday and I think it turned out very cute.

The “cake” portion is made from two packages of newborn diapers (WalMart brand-approx $9 each) I used the ribbon left over from making her invitations (approx $1 worth) and 15 different baby items that I bought over the last month at the 4 different dollar stores in our area ($15). Total for the entire thing-$34

So although it isn’t an inexpensive gift, I think it is reasonable (especially considering that this very similar diaper cake costs $89 before shipping and handling). You can decorate it with a lot more ribbon (or even curling ribbon) and a lot less baby stuff-I sort of got carried away in the baby aisles. Another way to bring the cost down even further is to make the “cake”, do the ribbon and some sort of topper then you can ask each person on their invitation to bring a different item to use to decorate the cake on the day of the shower.

The cake looks wonderful and MUCH more economical than any of the ones that are bought commercially and this looks much better!

It looks great! They are really going to like it. My friend received a diaper wreath for her baby shower and really liked that also.

Wow, that’s a work of art! And I think it’s worth a lot more than it cost you to make it–especially if you factor in the love that went into it!
