Cookies in a Jar

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on October 7, 2006

Well, I’ve given you some of the recipes that I’ve used in the past for the holidays, now I’m going to give you one that I’m trying this year!

I’ve decided to try some cookie in a jar mixes as gifts this year. I think it would be a nice and frugal gift for some of those folks that I like to give a little something to, like the teachers. I especially think that Princess’s kindergarten teacher would appreciate a mix, as she just had a baby a few weeks ago and probably won’t be up to much holiday baking!

The first recipe which caught my eye is “Orange Dreamsicle Cookies” which are supposed to taste like the popsicle that so many of us loved as kids. I particuarly wanted to try this one because #1 it’s unusual, and #2 I have a ton of white chocolate left over from last year. The white chocolate I originally bought at the bulk food store near me just didn’t melt! I don’t know what they treated it with, but I couldn’t get it to melt for my peppermint bark. So I vaccuum sealed it and have waited for a way to use it up. This may be my chance!

I found this recipe on the internet, but I feel comfortable posting it here because I found the exact same recipe on at least 5 different sites, with no credit given to anyone. Therefore I am considering it fair use.

Dreamsicle Cookies

1/2 cup powdered orange flavored drink mix, such as Tang

3/4 cup white sugar

1 1/2 cups vanilla baking chips

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Combine the flour with the baking soda and baking powder.

Layer the ingredients in a clean glass wide mouth quart sized jar, starting with the Tang, then sugar, vanilla chips and ending with the flour mixture. Press each layer firmly in place before adding the next ingredient.

Attach a recipe card with the following instructions to the jar.

Dreamsicle Cookies

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

2. Empty contents into a large mixing bowl. Add 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 egg slightly beaten and teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until completely blended.

3. Roll heaping tablespoonfuls into balls. Place 2 inches apart on a lightly greased baking sheet.

4. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 12 to 14 minutes or until tops are very lightly browned. Cool for 5 minutes on the sheet then remove cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

Makes 2-1/2 dozen

I am going to try this recipe with the kiddos this afternoon. I’m just going to bake them up, not layer them, to see how they taste. I’ll let you all know how they came out.

I’d love to hear how this came out. Creamsicles–or Dreamsicles–were an all-time favorite of mine as a kid!
