Of Cookies and Kings. . . .

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on October 9, 2006

“The time has come,” the Walrus said, “To talk of many things: Of shoes – and ships – and sealing wax – Of cabbages – and kings – And why the sea is boiling hot – And whether pigs have wings.” (from ‘The Walrus and the Carpenter’)

Well, I tried the dreamsicle cookies, and was not impressed. Part of the problem is that the white chocolate wasn’t of the best quality. They were the disks used to melt up for candymaking, and to me they tasted like powdered milk.

Also, although I followed the recipe exactly, and double checked my ingredients, I wound up with a sort of powdery mix that would clump into a ball when I sqeezed it. I wound up, after a little bit of a panic, adding water. I added a little at a time but it took about a 1/4 of a cup before it came together like cookie dough should. Not sure why that was. I checked several of the recipes online and they all had the same ingredients and proportions, and noone else mentioned that problem. Maybe I did somehow get distracted and mis-measure.

Good frugalite that I am, I have nonetheless always disliked the taste of powdered milk. I just think it tastes funny. Always have. I keep powdered milk on hand for emergencies and to use in mixes and baking, but don’t like the flavor straight or even half and half. For some reason to me powdered creamer has a totally different taste and I am more than happy to use it in my coffee. Strange eh?

The actual “cookie” part of the cookie were ok. They were very orange flavored, I used orange Kool Aid powder instead of Tang-it was cheaper. I had read some online reviews of the recipe and some folks had complained that they weren’t orange flavored enough, so it must be that the orange flavor in the Kool Aid is more intense.

End result: They are rather disappointing. It was a recipe that sounded like it should be delicious, but they turned out only so-so. I’ve been eating them, don’t get me wrong, but I probably won’t bother making them again.

Recommendation: If you think you might like them, and have the ingredients on hand (or else would use up the leftovers) then go ahead and try them. If it requires you to go out and buy an entire container of Tang and you don’t think you’ll ever use it, then I’d just give this one a go.

I’ll try another cookie in a jar recipe in a few days and see how it turns out. Hmmm, now which one should I try?

I’m with you on the powdered milk. I think it’s disgusting. I’ll save my money elsewhere, LOL! Too bad about the cookies, but you never know unless you try!
