Ask me!

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on October 27, 2011

Ok, I’m at a loss for what to write today.

Photo by ccarlstead (note: this is not me)

Well, that’s not true, actually I have a ton of ideas of things that I could write about, but they all require a bit of research and some photography.  Writing each post probably takes me longer than you think if you aren’t a blogger yourself (when I had long time reader Amyrlin write a guest post for me a couple of months back her comment was “how do you do this every day?”)

. . . anyway if I don’t get off the computer today and get the guest bedroom organized there could be serious marital disharmony in our house. . . honestly-there is a mattress propped up against the wall, 2/3 of the floor is covered with books and games the kids have pulled off the shelf, and there are random craft supplies and items that don’t have a home covering the bed and the other 1/3 of the floor.  Seeing as the guest room is actually at the top of the kitchen stairs and you have to walk through it every single time you go upstairs-well, it’s right there in front of you.

Really.  I could take a picture but it would be embarrassing.

So as an alternative I wanted something that was a faster and came up with something a bit different.  Today I’m opening the floor to questions.

Ask me anything you’ve wondered about me, about the Frugal Upstate household, the kids, the hubs, how we run our lives, what we’ve done in the garden. . . whatever you want to know.

(Of course keep it clean and respectful!)

I’ll make a video response using the old webcam right here at the desk I normally work at and post it.  It should be fun.

Of course if no one asks me any questions then I’m going to feel like the kid who gets picked last at kickball. . . and you don’t want to make a full grown blogger cry now do you ;)

Ok so here’s my Q for you, Jen :)

What’s the biggest, non-frugal, splurge you’ve made in the past couple of years? I don’t mean paying more for quality (we both know that cheapest is not always the best frugal option) – I mean a full-on, “no way to justify this as frugal” splurge.

No need to cry Jenn! Seriously out of the blogs I read ( I do read a couple) yours is my favorite and one of the most well written about a subject I cared about long before the recession and poor economic developments of the past five years or so: Being Frugal.
I believe being frugal does not or should not sacrifice fun, never seeing a movie, or eating boiled beans and ramen noodles everyday of yor life, it is about choices and where those choices can lead you. Throughout the years of reading Frugal Upstate you have given great tips on how to do a lot with a little, this has come in handy since I am now the sole earner for my family and probably will be for at least another year or two. I have been able to manage this because I have followed quite a bit of your advice! Now with all this rigamaroo I stated I will get to my point, ” Jenn, what is the best frugal tip you ever received that impacted your family’s life and helps you be a work from home mom?” (no one who stays home from an outside job doesn’t do work , in fact it is probably a lot harder work in my opinion!!)

I’ve got two questions:
1. Do you grow your garden from seed, or buy started seeds? How large is your garden bed? (I guess that’s two questions…)

2. Do your kids ever complain about your frugality?

I do love this site – my question’s silly, but I’m serious :) With all that you do every day, do you have a problem getting enough sleep in? Sometimes I am exhausted reading about your weeks!!

Somewhat related to Susie’s question, do you have trouble “turning off” from your blogging/social media work since your work place for it is mostly at your home? I have a different type of work-at-home job, and I find that I have this problem. It’s wonderful not having to commute to a work place; on the other hand, I feel like I’m never away from my job and that does sometimes make it hard for me to get enough sleep.

Okay, as a fellow blogger who tries to make time to “do it all” I want to know how you make it work. How do you find time to do everything? Do you have a schedule, do you live by post it notes, or do you just kind of know what needs to be done and you do it as you can/when you can? I am trying to find balance and to accomplish everything that is necessary and enjoy my littles too. I have notes every where, calendars every where online and on the fridge, and I stay up way too late. Maybe you have a better system!? LOL
