A few years back my daughter was a tv. We used a large box I had by cutting holes for her arms and head. We made an antenna out of aluminum foil. It was very cute and she received a ton of comments
Mine is pretty morbid…I was road kill about 15 years ago. I wore a black turtleneck and black pants, then put yellow tape from shoulder to ankle (for the stripes in the road). Then I put the fake red blood all over some stuffed animals and safety-pinned them to the ‘road’. Ok, yes, it’s horrible, but when I was 22, it was pretty darn funny! I even wore it to work…
My son was a nerd last year.
1. Tape around the glasses
2. White collared shirt – collar half standing up, half tucked-in
3. WAY too many pens in shirt pocket
4. slicked down hair
5. Pants pulled up to armpits – or as close as you can get
6. Belt and/or braces on pants
7. Speak like Urkel
8. Hunch back like you’ve been sitting on the computer too long
9. Talk about your video game stats
Total cost: $0
What’s funny is when we went to the church halloween party there was another guy in our church that dressed as a nerd. It was awesome! He and my son were like geeky twins. =D
My favourite was when I went as cloudy with a chance of rain. I wore a blue sweatshirt and glued cotton balls all over it (sky with clouds). I carried a water gun and whenever anyone would ask me what I was I said “Cloudy with a chance of rain” and I squirted the gun up towards the ceiling so it fell down on them like rain.
My son says “Wow, that must have been really annoying.” Why yes, yes it was. Which is why I only squirted one or two people. =Þ But it only cost me a couple of dollars. =)
My favorite costume ever was the year I went as a Stop sign. Two large pieces of cardboard cut to shape, painted red with the white lettering. Then we made it like a sandwich board, with stapled heavy cords to hold it on. We I wore red footy PJs but you could just wear dark sweats underneath.
My daughter went as a flower a couple of years ago. That was really easy – black leggings and shirt, green hat with colored paper petals taped/basted all the way around, and colored tissue paper taped on, framing the face. You can see a pic here (scroll to bottom, and note that costume is photographed AFTER a rainy evening of trick or treating…)

One year I made a table costume. I used a large box and cut out head and arm holes. I covered it with an old tablecloth and glued on some of the kids’ toy plates, cups and silverware. I attached flowers to the top of my head to make my head into a vase of flowers in the middle of the table.

One year we dressed up my son as The Incredible Hulk before there were so many costumes of him. We bought a green turtle neck for 25cents (thrift store) purple athletic type pants(thrift store) 50 cents and green face paint(dollar store). I put cotton balls in sandwich bags and sewed them in under his shirt for muscles he wore his flip flops and had green paint on his face and legs and hands his hair is dark so no problem he wore it for about three Halloweens. We ripped up the pants for effect. I kid you not we sell a costume at the store I work at starting $30 based on the same principle.
Wow, these are fabulous ideas. I may have to pull them out into a post of their own once the contest is done. That way all my readers can benefit from your ideas.
I have been lame pretty up to this point and many years just copped out and bought costumes, or when I made them I purchased all new farbric and patterns. This year though I am makiong all the kids costumes with fabric we already have, and I would have to say that not only are the kids excited about the costumes I am making, I am excited about saving at least $100 on halloween costumes and accessories ( so far I have 2 princesses and a knight costume half done and I will bestarting a dragon in the next few days).
My favorite is the “fat man” or the hobo. The fat man costume for kids: take a pair of Dad’s pants, sew a straightened hangar into the waistband, overalls to keep pants up and large shirt on top.
Cheap and can even take hangar out and pants are used again for Dad.
Thanks for the chance to win!
Blessings
Sue
My favorite costume was a friend of mine’s idea.
My friend dug through her daugher’s clothes and found a light blue shirt and pants for her to wear. Then she took some scrap batting and wrapped some around her daughter’s head and ankles.
Voila! One Q-tip!

My favorite frugal costume that I wore personally was a windsock, but I was majorly bummed out when most people didn’t know what I was! I took a posterboard sized piece of orange cardboard and cut out a silly pumpkin face so I could see out of it. I attached black and orange streamers and sat it on my shoulders so the “sock” was around my head and the streamers were hanging around my body…
Another frugal idea from my friend was a hospital patient – she wore white leggings and a fitted shirt under a hospital gown and rather large support hose. (over her leggings) She stuffed the rear end of the support hose so it looked like her gown was showing her backside. She finished her ensemble with some fuzzy no skid socks.
Great giveaway!
yay~ one of my favorite holidays
I love the chance to dress up, but I love trying to think of a cute/clever/unique costume.
I am NOT part of the contest (probably can’t be related) but my favorite costume was when I went as a wind up doll. I found/made all the pieces to the costume. blue felt poodle skirt (poodle removed) thrift store, white puffy sleeved shirt from the thrift store, blue and white striped soccer socks (already had and happened to match perfectly), thrift store black shoes, blue plaid fabric that I tied around my waist as an apron then cut and fused to the collar and cuffs. Red ponytail wig and red cheeks with “doll makeup”.
The best part was the big silver crank I fashioned out of styrofoam and tin foil! I made a “foot” on it to fit against my back and wrapped an ace bandage around that and my midsection (instant girdle as well?) I had to cut a slit in the back of the shirt to accommodate the crank. It looked great but people kept running in to the crank and eventually it got bent and I had to take it off.
It was a great costume though, and very inexpensive.
Just thought I would pass it along if anyone needed help with an idea
One year two of my girls dressed up as a Pair of Dice. We had just moved and had lots of boxes. We painted two big square boxes white, then added on black dots (the 2 and 5 were in front to be lucky), cut out arm and head holes, and taped open the bottom. Everyone we walked by while trick-or-treaing noticed the big dice.
