Walmart Toys for Christmas

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on November 18, 2012

Remember back in October when I went down to Walmart HQ in Bentonville AR?  Well while we were there I once again got the chance to visit the “Layout Center”.

The Layout Center is this HUGE warehouse where they set up all the aisles as if they were in one of the Walmart stores–but with two big differences:

1-They are set up as the “perfect” aisle, which means they are set up with as much room as needed to display every item in that category.  Most stores aren’t able to carry every item-so these aisles are much bigger.  For example, the candle section in my local store is only a couple of feet long-in the layout center there is a perfectly displayed 12 foot aisle with every candle that Walmart carries in every scent.

2-They are set up to reflect future seasons.  So while we were there in October we walked by all the Christmas displays, the Valentines Day section and the Easter aisles.  Because these items are on display we aren’t allowed to bring our phones or cameras into the layout center, and we are not allowed to tell folks about products we’ve seen without permission–this is not stuff that non Walmart employees typically get to see :)

While we were there, we got to see and play with some of the “Top 16 Toys” for Christmas, and we learned about Toyland Tuesdays–and I’m finally allowed to share with you.

These are Walmart’s Top 16 Toys:

Barbie Sisters Cruise Ship ~ Monster High – High School Play Set ~ Novi Stars Doll, Una Verse ~ Lalaloopsy Silly Hair Star Harmony B. Sharp Interactive Doll ~ Baby Alive Baby Wanna Walk Doll, BrunetteFURBY, Purple ~ Beyblade Destroyer Dome Play Set ~ NERF N-Strike Elite Hail-Fire Blaster ~ Hot Wheels Terrain Twister Radio-Controlled Vehicle, Red ~ Air Hogs Remote-Controlled Hover Assault, Red ~ Playskool Rocktivity Walk ‘N Roll Rider, Pink ~ Fisher-Price Imaginext Eagle Talon Castle Play Set ~ Fisher-Price Little People Disney Princess Songs Palace Play Set ~ LeapFrog LeapPad2 ~ Little Tikes iTikes Map, White ~ Monopoly Millionaire
Some of the ones I thought were kinda cool:

Little kids and big kids (aka the hubs) always seem to think remote controlled vehicles are cool. This one has two unique features! First-it not only goes forward and backward but also side to side. Second-because of the pontoons it not only works on regular ground and sand, but also snow and water!

This play set has sounds-which is not that unusual these days. But what is sort of different and cool is that if you buy additional pieces they interact. For example if you have the dragon or the ogre then the guys on the castle start calling out “Oh no! Dragon attack” or something similar. That was pretty fun.

If I’m going to get an electronic toy for a young child, I prefer that it’s educational! The unusual thing about this map toy is that there is an associated phone app-so if you forget the map at home and your toddler is pitching a fit, you can just let them play it on the app :)

Also while we were at the layout center (after we got done playing with the toys!) we got a peek at the Christmas Toy Catalog–and they promised to send us an advanced copy, which they did.  Princess and Buddy were happy to be the first ones in town to see it and used the “Wish List” in the catalog to keep track of what they wanted.
Oh, and a note-if you’ve got a Barbie lover in the house, there will be some new Barbie toys coming to stores in December!  The Barbie Fashion Design Plates and Barbie Color and Style Hair Doll.
Lastly, I want to tell you about Toyland Tuesday!

If you are on Facebook, you should not only be following Frugal Upstate–but also make sure you follow Walmart’s Facebook page so you can see all the Toyland Tuesday specials.  Every Tuesday Walmart will announce a new rollback on a toy suitable for Holiday giving via the Walmart Facebook Page!  There will even be opportunities for the audience to vote on WHICH toy they want to see rolled back :)
