Well all, Yankee Bill was sick yesterday. As in violently ill at about 3 a.m. In the way of men everywhere, he hates to admit that he is sick
He was all ready at 6:30 am to gut it out and head out to work, until that icky stomach virus took him down again while he was in the shower. Needless to say, he called in sick to work.
Since our home is fairly modest in size (following our frugal philosophy we bought a home well WITHIN our means, a 1200 sq ft raised ranch) and all of the living quarters are on one level (except the computer room/den) and Buddy was fully charged after his typical 11 hours of sleep~~well I decided that if Yankee Bill wanted to get any rest that Buddy and I better head out to see Princess’s morning assembly and then continue on into Norwich for some grocery and dollar store shopping.
Consequently at the time when I am normally able to sit and get some computer work done while Buddy is enthralled with Playhouse Disney upstairs I was hitting the road and unable to post. And by the afternoon I was unpacking groceries and my main squeeze was feeling alive enough to be downstairs on the computer at his favorite entertainment: Playing Hearts for free on POGO.com and watching TV. (I think it was Matlock!)
So that is why I was missing in action yesterday.
This morning he is feeling much better and decided to take the kiddos out to the local diner for breakfast. I declined in order to enjoy a hot cup of coffee while no-one whatsoever required anything at all from me! And of course to get my blog/Internet fix. (Yes, I am like a junkie!)
Writing about frugality, and actually having people READ about it from me makes me think twice about a lot of my decisions. I do have about 80 people who are repeat hits every day, so I have folks who come back and check out what I am doing, and I have an average of about 240 hits a day total, with somewhere around 300 page reads. Since I started this puppy a little over a year ago I’ve had a total of 67,000 hits. That’s a lot of people who have read my words on frugality. When I do something that seems “un” frugal, I really do stop and think about what my motivation is. You guys keep me straight! I can’t count how many drive through/take out dinners you have prevented me from buying!
(*Note-I get the info on the repeat hits from my statcounter.com account which I installed about a month ago. It is free, and doesn’t seem to have those annoying popup ads that my old bravenet account had. That is unless you all have been getting pop-ups and haven’t mentioned it)
So I really was thinking this morning why philosophically I don’t have a problem with Yankee Bill taking Princess and Buddy out for breakfast at the diner. After all, I could cook breakfast here for a fraction of the cost. Here are my reasons:
#1-We can well afford it. If we couldn’t, then we wouldn’t do it.
#2-As far a eating out goes, breakfast is one of the cheapest meals of the day.
#3-The diner is pretty darn cheap anyway.
#4-Daddy time is important for the kids. There were 5 of us kids growing up, and my Dad is a doctor (read VERY busy) so I don’t remember a lot of times where he did things with us alone. But those times where he DID do things just with one or two of us are really special memories.
#5-Kid time is important for the Dad! Sometimes we mom’s sort of take over when we go along, or have the kids at home, and I think that it is great for him to have that alone time with them too.
#6-It was extra nice and thoughtful for Yankee Bill to give me the opportunity to stay in bed for the extra time while they went out. How often does THAT happen for a mom with a 3 1/2 year old?
Overall, for the once every 2 or 3 months that it happens, I think that taking the kiddos out to breakfast is well worth it for our family!

Breakfast out is a cheap vacation for moms! Now that Andrew is 5 and no longer eats free at Shoney’s, we’ll have to rethink our options.
I loved your SNAP previews so much, I’m installing it on my site.
You can’t put a price on “Daddy Time”! The memories the kids are building with their dad are very special. I bet they had a great time!
Not every man spends that kind of quality time with his kids. You are very blessed that your father and your husband do that. My father did too and my husband is right now – it is a wonderfult thing. Thank you for your blog, it is VERY useful!
We used to eat breakfast out *only* when we were on vacation. But this year for my b’day the better half took me out for brunch (followed by a full day of shopping & dinner!!). As an everyday habit, I think breakfast out is quite wasteful, but done once in a while, it can be one of those little life pleasures that make a big difference
Also, a quick note regarding traffic statistics: I recently signed up for google analytics. I havent tried stat counter, so I cant compare the two, but I have found google analytics to be very good too.
Hi Jenn,
You know how many people visit your blog but, I am sure you also wonder who visits yr blog every day. Just wanted to let you know that I have become a regular of your blog all the way from Istanbul/Turkey more than 5000 miles away from you:)
Take care and keep posting for us.

Ditto to the Priceless Daddy time! And there is nothing better than a Diner for breakfast, unless it’s a diner for lunch!!! I love going to our diner when we can. The food is priced about the same as any combo meal (or less) & you are most likely supporting a local business person.
Hello Jenn, I love your website. I have a way of getting things free that you haven’t mentioned. I entered sweepstakes. I have alot of time on my hands and I fill out sweepstakes on the internet for an hour or two everyday. My favorite sites are: online-sweepstakes.com and bigsweeps.com. So far I won a trip for two to LA. I was too afraid to fly,so they gave it to me at Atlantic City which is close to where I Live.I had two night there plus 2 dinners, 2 trips to the spa and 2 facials and $500 for transportation. I won that on Eonline.com. I also won a bottle of Shalimar perfume, a gameboy, a decorating book from Country Living magazine, $500. gift certificat to the Turf Club at the race track.I won a trip to Las vegas from VH1.com but I still was afaid to fly so I lost out on thast one.I also won a huge amount of money from a local church. You have to have alot patience because nost of the time you don’t win. I haven’t won anything in the past two years. But like I said I have alot of time on my hands and I like entering contests and have alot of patience. ND
Also priceless: mom alone with her home time.
Although I suppose there is a day coming when I will get more than I want of alone time. Soon.
I agree with you all about the pricelessness of Dad/Kid time and the Mom/Alone time (which with a 3 and 5 year old doesn’t happen much)
Rebecca-Well, they may be growing up and moving on-but just think of it as gaining 2 new girlfriends with whom you have a lifetime of memories already! Now you can have special lunches together and more time to blog about fashion. . . . I know, not the same.
Canan-Thanks for taking the time to post! It is so nice to know that I have a reader in Turkey. In college I had a chance to visit Istanbul and did a bus tour where I did the whole “Visit the ruins of Troy & Battle Field of Gallipoli” thing (that made me cry). It is a beautiful country~I especially enjoyed visiting the gorgeous Mosques and the various markets, and had to bring home some “turkish delight” (ever since reading “the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” I had wondered what that tasted like).
ispf-I’ll have to check out those analytics. I’m sort of a stat junkie. You don’t want to know how often I check sitmeter during the day. It’s embarrassing.
ND-I’m glad the sweepstakes thing works out for you. I must admit I’m not good with those sorts of things. I don’t ever seem to win anything, and any sort of contest that involves “signing up” for a service that you then are supposed to cancel in a set period of time before you have to start paying for it, well, lets just say I have yet to disenroll from the cookbook club I joined 3 years ago. . . .I seem to be organized for a lot of different things, but rebates and sweepstakes seem to escape me.
Alone mommy time is definitely worth the price of breakfast!
