This coming Monday on Frugal Coast2Coast Lynnae and I will be talking with Jonathan Roche-fitness expert and radio personality from “No Excuses Weight Loss” on the Flylady Network. Jonathan told me that he believes that you don’t need to spend a penny to get in shape. . .
We are so excited to have him and are preparing a fun show. Here is where you can help!
Of course we love it when you all join in the live chat and call into the show, but whether or not you are listening live, you can ask your questions here and we will get them answered online.
So. . . What questions do you have for a fitness expert? What do you like about exercising? What makes you dislike exercise? What motivates you to accomplish a goal? What things just seem to confound you and keep you from exercising? Do you have alternative ways to exercise?
I’m looking forward to seeing what you all have to say.

Well, we joined the Y which has childcare, but recently my daughter was injured and none of the staff noticed. So I no longer feel safe leaving her with them, meaning I can no longer go to the Y except for maybe Friday nights or the weekend as I work evenings the rest of the week.
Once my daughter is more verbal and has better motor coordination, I will reconsider.
In the interim, I will try to go to the Y on the weekends at least once, ideally twice, during the week I plan to workout in the basement during her nap. I also like to run the stairs in our house, but haven’t found time for that yet.
Yesterday I did my first basement workout during her nap. It went pretty well. I can feel the squats today. I am fortunate in that when my daughter wakes up from her nap, I can give her some toys and a sippy cup in her crib while I take a shower.

I’d love to get some ideas for how to fit exercise into my life without having to buy an expensive piece of equipment or join a gym. I’ll definitely be listening to next week’s show!
My biggest challenge is that if I have to exercise inside our small house, I can’t seem to fit exercise into my schedule. Since I live in Upstate NY that means most of the year I’m unable to exercise!
I have two little boys — 3 and 4 years old. If they are awake when I try to exercise they are all up in my way, climbing on me, NEEDING my attention, getting into trouble. Even when my husband is home to take care of them, they just can’t seem to let me exercise.
If I try to exercise in the house before they wake up in the morning, I invariably wake them up. Then I have cranky boys for the rest of the day. And in the evening after they go to bed I an just too wiped out to even think about exercising. Since they don’t nap, that pretty much leaves me without options.
I keep thinking, if I invested in a fancy treadmill or stationary bike maybe I could exercise without waking them up. I could join a gym with childcare (although the nearest one is 20 miles away). Anyway, we can’t realistically afford either of these things.
I’d love to hear some creative ideas for getting good exercise quietly in my house before the kids get up, or things I could do in a very small space that incorporate my kids.
Oh — one thing I DO try to do is dance with my kids. We turn on some fun music and move around for 10 minutes or so a couple of times a day.
Looking forward to Monday’s show!
my money is spent on gear (mostly tennis shoes). how can i get good quality without spending a lot.
one of my favorite ways to get in exercise is to select time during my favorite show to do it! During the show(usually a 30 minute show)I walk in place. BUT, during the commerical breaks, I RUN in place. This gets my heart rate up and ends up working my bum pretty good. I think I originally read this idea in a magazine ages ago, and it has helped me tremendously since then.
Another great way is to bookmark 5 or 6 of your favorite dance songs on you tube and play them back-to back. Dance your heart out like no one is watching! It’s fun and gets your body moving. Every week I change the videos so I don’t get too bored of them.
I work out entirely at home. Sometimes I do it during my kids’ naptime and sometimes they’re awake. They are 5 and 2. Often they exercise with me, but I’m very strict about them not touching me when I exercise. They obey this well because they’ve gotten accidentally knocked over a couple times! If they really can’t manage the self-control to stay away from me, I give them toys and make them play in their rooms for 10 minutes, which always helps. Honestly, the more they see me exercise, the more the novelty of it wears off and they don’t bother me much.
I started out with videos. I recommend asking your friends if they have any videos they could lend you. Many people have lots of exercise videos they haven’t used in years!
I have started using exercise videos and DVDs from the library. My daughter (5)likes to exercise withme. I too have had to teach her to not touch me and we each have a corner of the livingroom to use so we do not knock each other over. The living room is 11X22 and would be a perfect size, if only we did not have furniture….
So I run 5-6 times outside rain, snow or sleet. One day it might clear up here in Michigan. The key is layer, layer, layer.
We are on a budget so I gave up my gym membership in the nice, warm, dry gym.
I also work out in my basement. This is where I get creative. I have my bike (not stationary) down there. I will do a circuit training & have been know to ride my bike. (We have ranch so it is a big basement) Plus I do not have step to do a step workout so I use an old toy stool for it.
I just however bought the Wii Fit & enjoy it a lot. It is way cheaper than a personal trainer.
Wow, great ideas and questions everyone. I’ve compiled them to address on tonight’s show. Remember, it’s always available to play on demand right after we are done!
