Blog World Expo? Anyone?

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on September 8, 2008

I am so thrilled that I will have the opportunity to attend the Blog World Expo this year. Is anyone else going? I am very interested in meeting up in person with some of the wonderful people I have only “met” in the blogosphere.

This will be the first professional blogging event that I have attended. Up until this point I have not been able to justify spending money to attend a conference for something that has been just a hobby. My sister has referred to it as my “full time hobby”-but as it has brought in no income it has been a hobby none the less.*

Luck and fate have interviened. Through my collaboration with Walmart’s “Money Saving Moms” project (also known as the 11Moms), I was offered a chance to attend the Blog World Expo, fully paid. It truly was luck and fate-they were only able to choose 2 of the 12 moms, and I was one of the ones chosen randomly. Woohoo!

This blog is going to go from hobby to professional status soon-don’t worry, not much will change. I am working on having some advertisments-but in keeping with my philosophy of not buying or encourgeing people to buy “stuff”, I will only use ads where the payment comes from simply viewing the blog page the ad is on-not the reader actually clicking through or purchasing anything.

I’m hoping more to leverage my “fame” into paid speaking engagements and paid writing in the print media.

Congratulations on the conference!

Regarding the advertisements it would be nice to see advertisements for products that go along with the frugal lifestyle. They could be coupon organizers or green products that help us to save money. That might also be a good idea for a vlog – items that you have purchased that either help you to be more frugal (a coupon organizer) or items that will literally save us money in the long run (energy efficient light bulbs).

I know by being frugal we tend to spend less, but there must be items out there that can help us be more frugal.

Congratulations on the Blog World Convention! Conventions are fun, but more importantly, one really LEARNS so much!
I agree with Heather's comments. Being frugal is about not wasting money. It is almost impossible NOT to spend money. The whole idea is to spend money judiciously. For example, I just purchased my first laptop which retailes for $699.00 in the store, for $524 total. I already own the programs that I will istall on it. It is a 'reconditioned' new model from a reputible online store, am having it sent to the relative (saves $40 in tax!), and there was no S&H for the item. This was a $125 savings . (FYI-I was walked through this whole process by a family ember whio is VERY computer savvy).
