I love Dollar Stores. I know I’ve said in the past that they are evil-and they are, mostly because I can’t resist them.
I especially love a local chain called “Real Deals”. They seem to have a much wider variety of items then the national chains. Here are the great deals I picked up this week there for $15

2 boxes of underwater stamp kits-These include about 20 small rubber stamps, an inkpad and an “activity book”. One will be for the kiddos this summer some rainy day when they are driving me insane. The other I’ll save in the gift box.
Colored Icecream Cones. I’m about out, and we’ve been eating some ice cream because of the nicer weather. (also a cone at home is cheaper than a cone at one of the 3 icecream shops in town.)
Flagpole bracket to mount our US flag to one of the columns on the front porch. You can’t have a nice white wrap around porch in your classic all American small town without a flag flying off the front porch!
Gardening Gloves-last years pair now has a hole in the palm. Of course it split while I was squishing tent catepillars, thus getting caterpillar guts all over my hand. Ick.
Floating Pool Thermometer-this is going in the hot tub since our old one broke.
3 “4 packs” of girls socks that will fit Princess next fall.
A flashing bicycle light-since I plan on riding the bike to any appointments, meetings etc around town this summer.
A set of 3 plastic scoops. I have a metal one in my white flour bin, and I’ve been having to switch it back and forth with the wheat flour. Yes, I could use an empty yogurt cup, but the scoop is nicer.
Clear Duct Tape for Yankee Bill. Because after all, you can never have too much Duct Tape.
Clear Contact Paper. Just ’cause it might come in handy.
Martha Stewart Living Paint Scraper. We need to do some scraping on the front porch banisters-and I have no idea where our other paint scraper disappeared into.
Ipod Cover. Yankee Bill got me a different brand of MP3 player for my birthday, and I was hoping that this waterproof, airtight cover (Otter brand-expensive usually) would fit. Of course it doesn’t-but my girlfriends daughter has the right model, and she babysits for me. So I’ll gift it to her.
All in all, a good shopping trip!

Please be sure to hang your flag on Flag Day – June 14th. Last year in my suburban town I went for a walk and only one house had the flag up.
We’ll be installing a big flag pole out back-but once we put the flagpole on the house we’ll probably keep it out most of the year. Technically it won’t be properly illuminated after dark-especially once the porch light goes out, so we’ll have to bring it in and out each day.
Hey – Don’t forget Memorial Day (this weekend)…as you grill, camp, swim, imbibe or whatever – make a mental note to consider the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to guarantee you that right!

I like to cover the covers of paperback books that are going to get a lot of use with clear contact paper. With that coating they hold up much better. I don’t know if you would have much occasion to use this idea now, but for anyone who buys the astronomically expensive college textbooks of today it could be useful. – Mac
Mac-good point! And eventually my kiddos will have schoolbooks to cover even in the late gradeschool age. Thanks for the tip.
What a good haul! Dollar stores are definitely evil. LOL
Jenn,
My husband has been talking about putting a large, illuminated flag pole in our back yard in the middle of a rock circle we have. If you have any frugal ideas about how we could do this, I’d love to hear them!
