Festival of Frugality #17 is UP!

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on April 4, 2006

This week’s Festival is up over at Five Cent Nickel. Lots of interesting posts, as usual. Here are some of my favorites, but go by and check them all out.

Jim of Blueprint for Financial Prosperity is starting a new series-Low Cost Weekend Ideas. He’ll be posting an idea every Friday, it sounds like something fun to check out from him every week. I believe that Jim is a single 20 something, so his ideas will be a lot different than the “Married with Two Kids” ideas that I come up with. He starts out with this article about Visiting Local Wineries. Now as he points out, there are a surplus of wineries in California, where he is, but there may not be one near you. However, it doesn’t hurt to do a Google search for your area-sometimes they lurk in surprising places. I happen to have the Black Bear Winery very close to me-I’ve been meaning to go there and try it out sometime soon.

Wow, you learn something new every day-by actually reading the Black Bear Winery website I see that they have a new affiliation with a local art school, and will be having an Art Showing once a month with music, food, demonstrations and more. I’ll call to check, but I’m pretty sure that is all for free. Wow, free date night with DH! Thanks for the idea Jim!

Do you like to read magazines? I’m down to just reading the ones that I get a free subscription to, but if you have certain magazines that you really like to read, The Family CEO’s article about buying cheap subscriptions from Ebay might interest you.

The Common Room has an article on sprouting lentils. Because of weird psychic brainwaves, that happens to be what my topic for this week was! She has the very good idea of using a piece of an old nylon to cover the top of the jar, and securing it with a rubber band. Well, that is cheaper than buying cheesecloth! Smart Lady!

On Money and Values there is an article about limited basic cable, which is apparently even cheaper than basic cable-along the lines of $7 a week. If you are on a tight budget and have to cut down your cable bill, this may be the way to go!

And last but not least, an interesting article by The Bargain Queen about having to make tradeoffs in order to live within your means.
