As we have all noticed, prices are rising on all foodstuffs. There are lots of articles and “talking heads” going on and on about this right now-but it is pretty hard to sort through all the information.
Cheap Healthy Good has written an excellent article “The Ultimate Guide to Understanding the Food Crisis“, with many cross links and supporting articles cited, to condense it all down and explain the major reasons, issues and ways to deal with the increases. Go on over and check it out, it is much more thorough than anything I can put together. And don’t forget to check out the excellent comments as well.

Thanks for the link! Even at Shoppers, a discount grocery in the DC-area, there is not a loaf of bread to be found at (or under) a dollar. Is it that bad Upstate?

God that’s nothing. I’m in Northern Ireland and a bog standard white sliced loaf of bread is about £1.30, that’s around $2.50. I know it’s two completely different countries but it gives you an idea of how bad it is here and that isn’t a sudden jump it’s an average price. Even potatoes aren’t cheap in Ireland anymore.

It’s amazing to see the differences from country to country.
Here in Upstate I’m actually not aware of the prices-I’ve been baking my own bread since about January. It used to be before that I could get a loaf at Aldi’s or Save a Lot for around $.89. I’ll have to pay attention next time I’m at the store (anyone else know?).

You can find loaves for around $2 in Brooklyn, but that’s on sale. Usually, they’re up around $3.
Thanks for the link, Jenn!
