How to Change Your Background

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on April 8, 2008

I found this nice little tutorial on Craftily Ever After on how to change your background in blogger from a solid color to a pattern.

I’m still messing around with it-I think this one is a bit busy.

For those of you on dial up, does the background pattern cause a slowdown? Please let me know!

No dial-up slowdown here!

Yes, it causes my computer to slow down. Heavy backgrounds take slightly longer to render on machines, especially ones with shared graphics memory. I would go with a plain background for that reason.

No slowdown for me. I find with my slooooow connection it is more the massive use of sidebar widgets etc that slows it down for me.

Not YOUR use of massive widgets…I mean on other blogs. LOL.

It looks nice, I like it with the coloring of your side bars, nice combo!

The background looks brown-and-mustard yellow to me. And with the wine-colored sidebars… well, I don’t think it looks good, color wise. Sorry. :(

I think it’s kind of nice. It has a sort of “Indian” look to it–was that inspired by your recent curry dish, LOL?
I was flattered when you told me you visit me every day. Thanks!

PS…I notice you might order take-out pizza this week. I actually made homemade pizza for the first time recently, and my husband really loved it. I can’t wait to make it again! Mozzarella has been really cheap lately. Otherwise, it isn’t cost effective to do it that way.
I wanted to tell you to be sure to look into your big local phone book before you get the takeout. Sometimes, local merchants have coupons in there that we never think to use. There might be some good pizza coupons! Also, don’t forget to check the backs of any store receipts, since there are sometimes local coupons there, too.

The background didn’t slow things down on dial-up for me. It showed up without delay. – Mac

Postscript- the photos take the longest time on my dial-up. With my minimal computer savvy I don’t know if there are factors that affect that (like jpg vs. gif affect the “size” in e-mailed photos) or not. -Mac

I have a DSL connection, but your blog takes longer to load that any other… I don’t think it’s the background — I think it might be the sidebars…

And I thought you were a criminal or you were going to teach us how to run away from our families and not be found!

I love the Indian background! But I think the side bars should be another color–use that neat paint wheel of yours!!

Hmmm. It’s interesting how different folks have different problems. I think that there is something about the code that this particular template is written in that causes slowdown on certain machines when loading.

I would recommend that some of you who have problems with templates, headers and background loading consider using a feed reader. I personally use bloglines (free) to track the 90 some odd blogs I scan daily. The feed shows up as text and pictures only-you don’t see any of the header, background etc. So it may speed things up for you.

I have a DSL connection too,and your blog takes longer to load that any other. It’s kinda frustrating. It can take a good 5 minutes to be able to navigate around your blog. No other site does it. So go figure.

Your blog does load very slowly for me, and today (4/14) was the slowest of all… perhaps the new background (which is lovely). Still on dialup here, nothing else available.
