Menu Plan 6/16

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on June 16, 2009

With all the traveling I’ve done lately, dinner has been a rather catch as catch can affair.  I am happy to be back into menu planning mode this week-I just feel so much more in control when I’ve got a plan!

Monday: Waffles

Buddy asked if we could have waffles sometime this week, so I obliged

Tuesday: Grilled Teriyaki “Dump” Chicken, Veggie/Potato Grill packets

Chicken is on sale at our local grocery store for $1.79 a lb, so I’ll run up there later this morning and pick up a bunch.  I’ll do a quick version of the “Dump” chicken recipe (it’s really supposed to be frozen in the marinade and then thaw/marinate) and make some veggie grill packets. Look for the recipes on Thursday!

Wednesday: Burritos & rice

Burritos are a great interactive meal-the kids get to assemble it at the table!  Since the only “hot” part is the meat, which can be cooked in advance and then microwaved, it is a meal that can keep the kitchen cool.  I will need to pick up some sour cream, but I have all the veggies, cheese, meat & tortillas on hand.  I’ll whip up a batch of rice in the rice cooker as a side.  I may plug it in down in the basement so as not to add heat to the house.

Thursday: Venison Broccoli Stirfry with rice

Still have a freezer full of Venison!

Friday: Homemade Pizza Hut Pizza

Due to travel etc it has actually been several weeks since we’ve made homemade pizza.  They kids have a half day of school (we don’t get out until next Wednesday) so we can have making homemade personal sized pizza be a late afternoon “craft” type activity. They love to help in the kitchen.

Saturday: Smorgash Board

aka use up all the leftovers in the fridge.

Sunday: Father’s Day German Feast

I’ll make Yankee Bill one of his favorite dinners based on our years in Germany together.  Schnitzel, Homemade Spatzel (noodles), Cucumber Salad and a Cherry Pie (which isn’t German but is one of his favorite).  The pork Schnitzel is made with pork that I bought last time boneless loin was on sale for under $2 a lb. I had the butcher at the grocery store cut it into 1″ chops, butterfly it and send it through the cube steak machine.  Then I brought it home and vaccum sealed it in meal sized portions.

As a person of both Swedish and German decent, I am all at once horrified and overjoyed by seeing this meal plan!

If you are going to have a “Smörgåsbord”, please spell it correctly. Even if you don’t use the special characters. :-)

I’ve never been a huge fan of Schnitzel, but Spatzel I can eat all day long! Do you make yours with a press or on a board?

We eat cucumber salad all the time. I never realized it was a “German thing”. However, my family is of German descent and my recipe is from my great-grandmother.

I learned something today!

The menu ideas are great. Thanks for posting them.

Are you finally going to show us how to make spatzel?! I can’t wait! I’ve been biting my tongue since the first 2 times I asked ya, but I’ve been dreaming of spatzel since you first mentioned it. Pretty please show us! :)
