Perseverance and Buying Second Hand (aka Thrifting)

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on September 20, 2007

When buying second hand, you rarely find what you want exactly when you want it. That’s why the dance leotards for Princess were such a surprise.

The key is to persevere. You have to know what things you want, check your sources with some frequency and be willing to wait for them. Then again, blind dumb luck does have it’s points too.

Personally I’ve been interested in getting a food dehydrator a long time now. It is one of those items that you could wind up using a lot, use a lot for a while and then stop using (which is why so many bread machines are for sale at thrift stores), or just use twice and then never touch again. When I’m not really sure, I can’t justify paying full price for one.

But today, finally, after three years of keeping my eyes open I scored! A brand new, in the box, with all literature, never been used Ronco dehydrator/yogurt maker/jerky maker, for $6!!!!!

Yes, that deserves 5 exclamation points.

I even plugged it in there in the store to make sure the element heated up.

So, what experiences do you all have with dehydrating???

Cool!

I’ve seen a few dehydrators, but we don’t have enough produce to make it worth drying our own.

We have had an Excalibur dehydrator for nine years now.
We love it. There is nothing like eating yummy dried peaches in the dead of winter.
The tweenager is waiting for the seasoning packets to appear in the grocery store, so we can make beef jerky out of the round steaks in the freezer. Also, we want to try the recipe for yogurt coated granola.
My sister in law has a Ronco; she loves it and uses it every harvest time.

It is great for fruit, meats for jerky and vegetables for veggy chips. With a little creativity you can invent new snacks. That is great!!! I love those things. You are going to have a blast and save a bundle!! Good for you!!! Annette

My problem is that while I’m on the repeated missions to find items I’m holding out for a good price on, I have trouble resisting the temptation of other things that are “such great bargains” and in “such great conditon” but are not likely to get much use in my life! – Mac

Thanks all, I really am looking forward to trying it out.

Mac-I sympathize. I’ve had to get tough with myself to keep that from happening too much. And it still does happen!
