Quick Tip-Free Streaming Music

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on December 15, 2006

I wanted some music while wrapping some Christmas presents yesterday, so I did a quick search for “streaming Christmas music”. I somehow came up with a site for AOL that has XM radio stations that you can tune into for free. As you know, free is my favorite cost!

If you have cable modem this is a great way to listen to music. Dial up is probably not so great :) . There are a ton of stations of all sorts of music, and there were about 5 different stations of Christmas music alone.

You go to the main AOL Radio page, and click on the “listen Now” button. It will pop up ANOTHER window where you click on the green “Listen Now” button (you don’t have to do the “sign on” button on the right). The first time you will have to download a free applet of some sort (it was really quick) then a small window will load. On the left you will see “station by category” you can scroll down and find the category you want, expand that and then chose the actual station under that. On the right you’ll see info on the song etc.

Since all my gift wrapping stuff is downstairs near the computer I thought it was pretty cool! They also have all sorts of stations divided up by type of music and by decade, as well as some talk radio. They do not have the entire XM satellite radio lineup available. (I know this because I bought DH the XM radio for his truck a few years ago for Christmas-he loves listening to the talk radio while he drives around for work).

Have you heard about Pandora.com? It is my favorite for listening to music on the computer. It is also completely free. You just type in the names of songs you like or artists and it creates a station for you based on those selections. You can do as many stations as you like. One of mine now is just a Christmas song station.

We use Pandora and Yahoo’s Launch Radio. The Launch Radio has a great kid’s station.

Also, if you search under streaming radio recorders, you can usually find software to put on your computer to record the streaming radio. We will get this going before we go to bed and I wake up to a whole bunch of new songs. It is a great way to make your kid’s a new kiddy mix without forking over the big bucks ;)
