Quick Tip: Marking Hardboiled Eggs

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on October 2, 2009

My family likes all kinds of eggs.  They are a healthy, economical (read frugal) protein source, and just a classic for breakfast!

When times are busy, I find that hard boiling a dozen eggs is a great morning/lunch timesaver for me.  I boil them then when dried off I place them back in their carton for storage in the fridge.  The hubs can grab a couple in the morning and give them a quick peel for breakfast, or I can pack them along in the kids lunches. Sometimes I even get fancy and make egg salad.

Although I love the fact that the egg cartons are easily stacked and fit well in the fridge, it can get confusing though when you have cartons of both hard boiled and raw eggs in there.

Permanent markers to the rescue.  Just mark each hard boiled egg in an obvious way so that no one grabs a raw egg accidentally to “peel” thinking they are going to have a quick and easy breakfast and winding up with a mess.

I like to have a little fun with my markings.  The added benefit is it makes the hard boiled eggs even more fun for the kids.  My hubs just shakes his head:

Now admit it, doesnt this make you smile?

Now admit it, doesn't this make you smile?

There you have it, a quick easy and frugal way to keep your hard-boiled eggs straight!

Great idea, Jenn.

I usually just put HB on hardboiled eggs, but your method is much more fun.

Any tips on how to boil them without getting the green ring around the yoke? I know I’ve read tips on what to do, but I can never remember when I’m boiling eggs. Always seem to get the ring. YUCK.

When boiling eggs, start them in cold water, bring to a hard boil, put a lid on, and shut them off, and let them steam for 20-30 mins (depending on how you like your eggs). You should have picture perfect eggs with no rings. This my M-I-L’s method and it has worked beautifully over the years. Shock them in ice water after and they should be easy to peel.

I always put a splash of vinegar and a couple drops of food coloring in the water before I boil eggs. The different color lets me know which ones are boiled.

Amyrlin’s method for boiling is the one I use, too, and it’s awesome.

Your post reminds of a story in one of the Ramona Quimby books in which she mixes up a raw egg with a hard-boiled egg. She brings the egg to school to play a joke, breaking the egg over her head only to discover that it was raw! Oops!

I know eggs are a great source of inexpensive protein. But just don’t forget there can be a lot of unnecessary cruelty that comes with those less expensive eggs.

Sorry to be such a downer.

It doesn’t have to be the case. $.25 an egg, is a good bit more expensive than conventional eggs, but it’s still inexpensive as far as sources of protein are concerned.

For those without the time to really look into specific practices or farms, or find local suppliers, you can look for the “Certified Humane” label. It’s not perfect, but at least it’s a start.

How long can boiled eggs typically be stored in the fridge?

Marking the eggs is a cute and also loving idea. I think this is the kind of stuff that makes the world go round. – You can also tell whether an egg is cooked or raw by trying to spin it. If it spins, it is cooked. If it doesn’t, it is raw.
