Visiting with Mom

Well, we drove out to Long Island to visit my Mom yesterday. We’ve got a busy 5 or 6 days planned of fun activities. Today for my birthday gift, Mom is watching Princess and Buddy and Yankee Bill and I are going into the city to watch a Broadway Show!

Frugal? Well-probably not cheap–but we are going in at noon, standing in line at the TKTS booth for an hour to buy last minute tickets at half price for one of the current Broadway shows. For those of you not aware, the TKTS booth on Times Square (currently relocated to the Marriott Marquis due to renovations) opens at 3pm and goes till 5pm to start selling same day tickets for current Broadway shows. It’s a deal for the theatre as it sells seats that might otherwise go empty-heck they are selling tickets for a show that starts at 7 or 8pm that night! It’s a bargain for consumers who are willing to take a gamble on the show they might see. We are hoping instead of paying over $100 a head for the show we will pay $50.

We are hoping to get in to see Wicked, but if not, we’ll choose something else to see. (Yes, I’ve looked up a few of the shows that are playing and have a passing familiarity so we can make an on the spot choice). Then we’ll either window shop or, time permitting, hit the American Museum of Natural History (probably have to take a subway or cab to that) then do dinner and get to the show.

We are driving in from my mom’s, and we are going to have to pay parking-but that’s ok. We won’t spend more than we HAVE to, and for us, this is one of those things that we save money in other areas so that we may indulge ourselves in.

    Driving into the city. Ugh.
The Natural History Museam is my favorite!

Hope you had fun at whatever show you went to see.

Hope you have a wonderful time! I love that museum, but haven’t been there in about 8 years.
It would be great if you could get tickets to “Wicked.” But any show would be fun to see!

In the future, you may want to try my favorite discount broadway ticket web site: http://www.broadwaybox.com

You can get some tickets as low as $26.50, emailed to you, no waiting in line. I see one broadway show a month, usually a Wednesday afternoon and have never paid more than $50 for anything!

Good luck, from a fellow New Yorker!

Driving to the city was no biggie at all – and turned out to be a good choice….no trains back out from 11:30 PM – 1 AM. We found parking 3 blocks from the theater – out to the car and home (Cici’s) by 12…too easy!
We saw Mamma Mia and it was absolutely wonderful, you just can’t help but get but caught up in that Abba music – and the storyline was fun too. Highly recommend it to anyone (and I’m not the ‘artsy’ one in the family) – not a “frugal” day – but what the heck … my baby is worth it! Glad you had a good birthday sweety – I luvs ya!

Amanda-Actually,it wasn’t bad. Granted-Yankee Bill was doing the driving-but still, it was a straight shot till we got in the city, and then we pretty much went north a few blocks and parked in the first garage we came to for $33 for the day and then walked a couple of blocks. And considering the fact that we would have missed the 11pm train after the show and there wasn’t another out till 140, well, it was worth it!

M2F-We skipped the museum, we figured it wasn’t enought time to do more than glance at a few things. So we had a cup of coffee and some cheesecake at the Starlight Dinner where the waitstaff sings, walked a lot and people watched, had a nice dinner and did the show. It was lovely! I can’t wait till Buddy and Princess are a bit older and we can really take them in to see the museums et al-I think they would love those natural history dioramas!

Never again debt-We’ll have to try that site next time! Now that we’ve tried this once, we’ll do it again I’m sure. If we can buy the tickets ahead of time and avoid standing in line for an hour that would be a good thing . . .

YB-I had a wonderful time too honey-thank you for a wonderful birthday gift :) I love you too!

Bick-we are looking forward to seeing you whenever you get the time. . . oh, and you can drag along that handsome husband of yours if he can get some time off from flight school.
