Just thought I’d share some of the articles and posts (of all kinds) that caught my attention this week.
Drew over at Cook Like Your Grandmother has an older post that I stumbled on about how to render and store bacon fat. For some reason I’ve used quite a bit of bacon lately, and I have indeed been keeping the fat in a container in the fridge to use. I made roasted potatoes with it that were quite scrumptious! However I didn’t think to do the straining step that he recommends.
I have been working hard this week trying to get my bookkeeping straight for tax season. Tip-don’t throw all your receipts and deposit slips from your business into a folder and wait until March to try to figure them out! Anyway-I knew I needed some software to place everything in, so I found this “Simple Start Free”edition of QuickBooks. It has some limited functionality-but hey, the next version up costs $179. I had to start somewhere!
Those of you who are not bloggers might not have realized that there was a BIG brouhaha this week over an article that was written about Mommy Bloggers in the New York Times. My friend & colleague Kelby Carr (also known as Type A Mom for her blog network & conference of the same name) wrote a great response about the newspaper bias against Mom Bloggers. I particularly appreciated her point of view because Kelby was a professional journalist for 15 years-so she can see both sides of the issue.
As you all know, I’ve been working on my blog design-I’ve got the fabulous Lara of Ginkgo Consulting working with me on it. The site as it appears now is sort of an in between stepo as , syou can imagine I’ve been thinking a lot about blog designs. This article on Blogging Basics 101 caught my eye because it walks you through you how to find and install a custom rss button on your blog.
If you are a freelance writer you really should be subscribed to The Freelance Writing Jobs Network. I consider the creator & owner of the network, Deb Ng to be a close personal friend (she used to write “Simply Thrifty” back when I started blogging)-so when she sends out a job lead like this one about a writing gig paying $130 an article I sit up and take notice. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out to be something that was a fit for me.
Finally-how cute and frugal is this idea for an adorable cupcake stand from My Blessed Life? It makes me think of something Meredith at Like Merchant Ships would do.
So, how do you like this new idea of mine to post some of the posts & articles that are on my radar every couple of weeks? And if you like it, what are some good names for it as a regular feature?

Jenn, I love link round-ups! The links you shared were interesting and I clicked over to almost all of them (I’d already read a few–like Kelby’s). Thank you so much for including my custom RSS article.

I like this idea for a new regular feature. I like the current title for it, but I’ll comment again if I think of another possibility.
