Frugal Fridays-Kids Summer Movie Deals

I’ve been meaning to jump on the “Frugal Friday” bandwagon over at Biblical Womanhood for the longest time. After all, this entire BLOG is about frugality, I shouldn’t have any trouble linking every Friday! So here we go-make sure you head on over to Crystal’s blog to check out the other wonderful tips.

FREE SUMMER MOVIES!

A ton of different movie theaters offer free or dollar movies for kids during the summer months. Frequently these are older movies, even ones that are out on DVD already. But to me the opportunity to take the kids on a free (or very low cost) outing in the air conditioning is worth it, even if they have already seen the movie before. And the theater is full of other parents and kids, so you don’t have to worry about your kids disturbing anyone else. Unfortunately, none of these deals are offered in upstate NY. Sometimes life just isn’t fair!

NOTE: To keep this frugal you will want to avoid those high cost theater snacks. Do a bit of planning ahead-Make sure the kiddos know in advance that you won’t be buying snacks in the theater. Do what is ethically right-if your theater allows it (or doesn’t forbid it) bring in some snacks of your own, or else have a snack right before going in (you can eat at home or in the car) to forestall those “But Mom, I’m STARVING” conversations.

Cinemark is offering 10 kids movies this summer that will cost $1 each, if bought the day of, or $5 total if bough in advance. The website lists all of the cities and states that have the Summer Movie Clubhouse” promotion.

Regal Cinemas offers their “Free Family Film Festival” at 10 am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at participating locations. The seats are on a first come, first serve basis. Go to the website to check and see if it is offered at a cinema near you.

AMC Summer Movie Camp is the same type of system as Regal, but on Tuesday mornings, and groups can reserve tickets in advance! (Bonus-I wonder how many folks you have to get together to be considered a group?)

Dickinson Theaters (which I am not familiar with) also has a summer kids camp. You have to click on the name of the theater to get to their main page and then click on the summer camp icon to get the details for that particular theater.

Consolidated Theaters has summer kids movies for either free or a dollar each. Again you have to click on your location and then you can get the details for the different movies and times.

National Amusements has “Bookworm Wednesdays”, where children over 6 bring in a book report and get a free movie. Children under 6 get in without a book report when accompanying an adult.

    Hi Jenn-

Our movie theater also offers refreshment deals. $1.50 for a kids popcorn and soda! This is in addition to the free movie! The catch is, and you may want to warn your readers, the deals are offered because so many day cares and summer camps attend these performances. The shows are often completely filled. I find we usually have to arrive at least 20 minutes early to get a seat.

    Thanks for the info Jenny!

Also, as one reader pointed out to me, I goofed it on the AMC day. This year they are playing the kids movies on WEDNESDAY, not Tuesday. Sorry for the confusion.

Last summer I was so bummed because it was the first summer when the ladies didn’t need me to drive them to the free movies. But we went together anyway! :)

Just because the theatre is full of parents and children does not mean that children running around are not disturbing to others. My children can and will sit quietly and watch the movie. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for other parents to gain control of their children so that they are not disturbing others. This not only applies to theatres either. If your children cannot sit still and be quiet in restaurants, church, etc. they should not be there.
