Best Of-Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets

October 12, 2007 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 7 Comments

This morning as I ate my oatmeal (leftover store bought from the camping trip), I realized that it had been a long while since I had posted my recipe for homemade Oatmeal Packets.

To be honest, I think the homemade ones taste better-but I’ve got this other stuff to use up. With the back to back trips, and my (mistaken) impression that it would be COLD camping in October etc, I wanted to have something quick and warm available for breakfasts. I just didn’t have the brainpower and time to make some of my own up.

But you can believe that once this store bought gunk is gone, I’ll be whipping up some homemade! I particularly like it with some raisins and cinnamon.

Making your own instant oatmeal packets can be much cheaper than the store bought version, especially if you buy your oats at a bulk food store. I used to use this recipe all the time when I worked full time. In the morning I could just grab a pkt, throw the water in and eat.

Homemade Instant Oatmeal
(Makes 8 Packets)
3 Cups Quick Cooking Oatmeal
Salt

Put 1 cup oatmeal in the blender or food processor and blend to a powder
(you may want to do this 1/2 C at a time).

In each of 8 zipper style baggies 1/4 cup un-powdered oats, 2 tablespoons powdered oats, and 1/8 teaspoons salt.

To use: Empty packet into a bowl. Add 3/4 cup boiling water. Stir and let stand for
2 minutes. For thicker oatmeal, use less water – for thinner oatmeal, use more
water.

You can adapt this recipe to many different flavors. For brown sugar oatmeal add 1TBS packed brown sugar to each. You can also add raisins, splenda, chopped dried apples, or even make a fruit and cream version by adding 1TBS powdered creamer and 2TBS dried fruit.

Enjoy!

Oh, cool! My husband loves oatmeal on the cooler days, but those packets get expensive. Thanks!

Hope you all enjoy the recipe. If you have kids who need the “fun” factor bumped up a bit, try buying some sprinkles and using those instead of sugar on the top (we use it on regular cereal too)!

We get some of the shape ones at the local bulk food store (right now they are pink and blue swirled easter eggs). It makes it look more like “junk”-and I think they actually use less sugar with a small sprinkle than with adding a big teaspoon of sugar.

So clever! Thanks for this wonderful solution to my husband’s penchant for instant oatmeal.

Love this idea nd I hope you don’t mind that I have linked you from my blog. I’m working on my own variation of the recipe for my son who loves the packet ones but can’t handle the preservatives and additives in them!
Thank you for the great idea :))
