Drowning in Hotdogs

by Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on October 14, 2006

Well, a few days ago we brought the camper home from the campground where it spent the summer. I unloaded the freezer and fridge, and found a LOT of hotdogs!

I need your help! Lets all try to think of as many was as possible to prepare these. I’ll start the list, and take all the easy ones thank you. Please chime in and give me as many other ways that you can think of.

1. Hotdogs on a roll
2. Hotdogs cut up in Mac ‘n Cheese
3. Hotdog cut up in BBQ Sauce
4. Cocktail Hotdogs (in a sauce made of melted grape jelly mixed with Dijon mustard)
5. Corn Dogs
6. Pigs in a Blanket (oh! I haven’t thought of those in years)
7. Hotdogs and Baked Beans

OK, now it’s your turn!

Spanish rice. Kids love it, and the hotdog pieces get so cute and puffy. Scalloped potatoes and hotdog casserole. Hotdog kebabs. And if you slash the dogs on the diagonal and put them on top of the baked beans, it looks more fancy and less camp-cooking. :o ) Oh, and split pea soup with hotdogs instead of kielbasa.

Hotdogs in chili, hotdogs in lentils (the only way some of my family will eat lentils), bagel dogs, chili over hotdogs. If you go the hotdog-chili route, then you can skip the meat and just have bean chili to save some $$.

Pigs in a blanket would make a great snack for Buddy’s snack day! ;)

Chop up and use in red beans and rice or jambalya.
My mother used to split them and pan-fry them with a bit of oil. Made a good sandwich, or they can be cut up and mixed with scrambled eggs.

Hot dog soup my kids loved it. Leftover frozen or just saved in the fridge vegetables whatever you have, a little of a little bit of this, a little bit of that, the more the merrier, carrots celery onions potatoes and a standard cream base add sliced hotdogs and serve with crusty bread or chips. I have a hot dog spaghetti recipe and also a hot dog sandwich called “cheesy wieners” (doesn’t require hot dog buns). Also hot dogs partially sliced through until they form a circle. Place on an English muffin, top with pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese, broil until brown.

Am I the only one who loves wieners with sauerkraut? Slice one package of hot dogs and combine with a large can of sauerkraut. Mix in a dab of spicy brown mustard and heat in the crockpot as long as you like.

Hot dog casserole–fry up Hot dogs, celery, and onion. Book favorite pasta (I like the funky shaped ones, but elbow works too). Add one can of condensed tomato soup, 1/2 can of water, 1 tsp of chili powder, and 1/2 cup of froz. corn. Heat throughly and then add pasta until hot.

Another favorite here is beanie-weanie soup. Hot dogs, baked beans, chicken stock and you’ve got a soup a kid would love! Add veggies to make more nutritous!
