Recipe: Beer Braised BBQ Ribs

March 15, 2013 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 4 Comments

Do you love ribs?  I do!

For some reason ribs always seemed to be something difficult to cook (I’m not sure why).  This delicious and easy recipe for Beer Braised BBQ Ribs changed all that.  Made using your favorite BBQ sauce and beer-it’s a high impact dish made with just a few simple ingredients.  I’ve even tried the same recipe using chicken instead–delicious!

Beer Braised BBQ Ribs

Ingredients

  • Pork Ribs
  • Salt & Pepper
  • 1 lrg Onion
  • 1 can Beer
  • 1 jar BBQ Sauce

Instructions

  1. Cut apart your ribs, sprinkle with salt and pepper and brown briefly in a skillet.

  2. Place ribs in lightly greased baking pan, top with sliced onions and pour in the beer.

  3. Cover with foil and bake in 375 oven for 1 1/2 hours.

  4. Remove ribs from the oven, remove the foil, and carefully pour off the beer. Leave the onions in the pan!

  5. Pour the entire bottle of BBQ sauce over the ribs and return, uncovered, to the oven for an additional 1 hour.

Variations:

  1. You can use various chicken or pork cuts instead of the ribs.
  2. The flavors will change depending on the type of beer and the type of BBQ sauce you use.
  3. Don't do alcohol? Try using chicken broth, ginger ale, cider, apple juice, or cola instead.

A tip with pork ribs ( I don’t care for the beef, no my family does) that I learned prior to cutting them up is to peel off the membrane that attaches them on the inner side, it gets that good flavor down in the meat getting it tender, making it even better ! Looks so good Jenn!

Would I be able to do this recipe in the crockpot? What modifications would I need to make? I’m thinking that I could just throw everything in the crockpot and set on low for 4-6 hours…what do you think?

Well, it’s a two stage process-braise in the beer, pour it off, then cook in the BBQ. I guess you could start it in the beer, let it cook around 4-6 hrsdrain the beer, add the BBQ Sauce and crock pot for another 2 hours, OR you could cook 6-8 hrs in beer in the crockpot, then pour it off, put them in a baking dish, pour the bbq over and then maybe broil for a bit to sort of carmelize the BBQ Sauce onto the ribs. . . or bake for 1 hr or so. . .
