Spiedies are a local specialty where I live. They are similar to a Kabob (shishkebab? shishkabob? Whatever) but have a very specific type of marinade. They are so well loved here that there is actually a special festival dedicated to them~The Spiedie Fest.
Spiedies
Approx 1 LB of meat*
1/4 C Lemon Juice
1/3 C Olive Oil
1/4 C Cider Vinegar
2 Cloves Garlic, chopped
5 Fresh Mint Leaves, minced
1 TBS Basil
1 TBS Parsley
1/2 tsp Oregano
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
Cut meat into 1 inch cubes. Combine all ingredients together and marinate overnight.
Place meat cubes on skewers and grill till done.
Meat is usually eaten on soft white Italian bread or hotdog rolls, although you can have them alone, on a salad or even on a pizza (as some local establishments do)
For some more variations on Spiedies check out the Spiedie Fest Recipe Winners
*Chicken, pork or even Venison are typical. The meat amt is approximate-however much it seems like will fit in your marinade.

Lamb is often used and red wine vinegar is a nice sub for the cider type.

Everyone seems to have a different recipe, I’ve never seen one with mint before! I don’t even skewer mine anymore, I bought a grill wok and just use that!

Thank you so much! I’ll be trying these soon…they sound a bit like gyros meat.

Oh man — you are making miss some speedies….um, might need to cook me up some this weekend. If only I had some Grandma Brown’s Baked Beans and salt potatoes I’d be one happy Yankee-Southern girl!!!! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I’m so glad that you all enjoy this recipe. I’ve got a batch of venison sitting in the fridge right now. Speidies on Sunday (my menu plan from Mon has been rearranged just a tad)

Ahhhh Memories. I’m a Binghamton University alumni and I do miss the Spiedi fest and Balloon Rally for sure. My kids are spending the summer with my ex-husband there and they told me all about it. Thanks for the recipe info, since now I have a hankering for them.

This is the only recipe (winner?) from the 2009 festival I’ve seen published! I’m curious as to what category this was (poultry, beef, pork etc)? I’m a native born and raised Binghamtonian (BCHS 74′) now living in San Antonio TX. Do you have any more recipes from the 09′ fest? pressconnects.com didn’t publish them this year!!! Can you help? Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!
