DIY Chalkboard Canisters

April 26, 2012 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 7 Comments

Here’s a fun project tutorial that you still have time to complete for Mother’s Day. . . DIY Chalkboard Label Canisters!

This tutorial grew out of my Walmart Mother’s Day craft challenge.  I wanted to do something a bit different, and I’ve been dying to try chalkboard paint-so there you go!  You can make this whole project with supplies from Walmart for around $18

Materials:

Canisters (I bought glass cracker jars at Walmart for $4.95, $3.95 and $2.95 respectively)
Chalkboard paint (just under $5 at Walmart)
Foam brush
Painters tape
Exacto Knife or Razor Blade

The project itself is super simple to do-basically you just mask off the area you want to be a chalkboard label and then paint 3 or 4 coats of the chalkboard paint -for full detailed directions just watch this video I made, “Chalkboard Labeled Canister Tutorial”

Of course now that I’ve complete this project I have chalkboard paint leftover. . . which has me wondering.  What ELSE could I paint with chalkboard paint?

That looks pretty cool! I guess you could use the leftover paint and paint a section of wall in your kitchen perhaps and use that as an alternative to a bulletin board. You could put messages, grocery list, etc.

I’m thinking maybe the inside of a cabinet door. I’ve got a pantry with big doors that would work perfectly for-and then I don’t have to worry about anyone leaning on it and rubbing the chalk off or anything. . .

I was thinking you could make a message board on your childrens bedroom door. Maybe put a little frame around it. or you could just paint the glass in a picture frame then you have a “fancy” and portable chalk board…. hmmm… that has me thinking that might be a cute thing to do for my daughters college dorm room!

Shari-that would be great! I love the frame idea because it is not permanent.
