Father’s Day Dinner Fit for a King

June 16, 2011 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 2 Comments

What better way to show the special dad in your life how much you appreciate him than to make a special meal?  Cooking exceptional meals for special occasions may cost more than my average daily dinner–but they sure cost a heck of a lot less than taking a family of four out for a similar quality dinner!  That’s frugal in my book.

For Fathers Day Walmart offered me the chance to participate in a Challenge-could I make a fantastic meal for Yankee Bill for $30 or less?  Need you really ask?

My guy is a red meat man, but rather than doing the standard steak I decided to take the manly meal of burgers on the grill and kick them up a notch by stuffing them with blue cheese.  Pretty awesome, but I figured why not go all the way and toss some shrimp on there as well to make it more of a surf and turf.  Grilled veggies are gorgeous, tasty and healthy as a side.  Potato Pancakes are one of Yankee Bill’s favorites and we usually only have them at Christmastime-so those go on as our starch.  Finally if you ask him what his favorite dessert is he will say “Cherry Pie”, hands down.

So that’s the menu:

Blue Cheese Stuffed Burgers on Sesame Rolls
Teriyaki Grilled Shrimp
Grilled Vegetables
Potato Pancakes
Cherry Pie

The fixings for a great Father's Day dinner.

Cherry pie only needs 2 cans of cherries, pie crust, sugar, cornstarch and almond flavoring.

Total cost for the ingredients used*?  $26.89!  Enjoy a few beauty shots from dinner.

Don’t you wish you were eating at MY house on Father’s Day?

*Note:  I purchased the largest package of ground beef because it was the lowest cost per pound-but I only used half for the meal.  Similarly I only used half the package of shrimp, and half of the bag of potatoes for the meal.  So I used partial costs for those items.
