Tomato Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for a Crowd

February 7, 2015 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 1 Comment

There is just something homey about a grilled cheese sandwich, isn’t there?  It’s an American childhood classic.  But that doesn’t mean that grilled cheese sandwiches have to be just kids stuff.  The folks at Walmart have joined with Wonder bread and Kraft singles for a special grilled cheese solutions program–and they asked all of us Walmart Moms to come up with our own special take on grilled cheese.

Tomato Bacon Grilled Cheese for a Crowd

In my house, if you are going to make grilled cheese, then you are going to make it with a nice thick slice of fresh tomato inside.  So what’s better than grilled cheese and tomato?  Grilled cheese, tomato and BACON!

Ingredients to make Tomato Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Of course I headed out to my local Walmart to pick up some Kraft American Cheese Singles, Wonderbread, vine ripe tomatoes, and some Great Value thick sliced hickory smoked bacon.

The first thing to do was to cook up the bacon–the easiest way I’ve found to do a lot of bacon without any fuss (and to have it lay flat instead of all crinkled and twisted up) is to bake my bacon.

Now I hate standing over the stove making one grilled cheese at a time as each member of the family waits impatiently for theirs.  Instead I prefer to use an old trick my mother in law taught me–making grilled cheese sandwiches for a crowd using my oven’s broiler!

Making Tomato Bacon Grilled Cheese for a Crowd

Start by preheating your broiler.  There is no temperature selection for a broiler–it’s 500 degrees or nothing!  While that is heating up you assemble your sandwiches–buttered bread, bacon, tomato, cheese, buttered bread) and set them on a large baking sheet.  Mine comfortably fits 6 sandwiches at once.

Place your pan with the sandwiches under the broiler and leave the door cracked.  Keep an eye on them, it will only take a minute or two for the bread to toast–and it’s easy to go from nicely toasted to burnt!  Pull the pan out, flip over  your sandwiches and repeat with the second side.  That’s it–6 grilled cheese sandwiches in no time at all.

Mmmm. Tomato Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for a Crowd!

So next time you need a quick and easy (but tasty!) lunch, pull out the Wonder Bread and Kraft Singles–and make some grilled cheese sandwiches for a crowd!

Here are the amazing grilled cheese creations the rest of the Walmart Moms came up with:
