I am not a crocheter. I learned to knit from a lady who volunteered with the 4H when I was in, oh, I think the 4th grade. While I don’t often do anything complex (and I’ve never learned how to do intarsia–knitting designs with multiple colors) I’ve been knitting a long, long time–so long that I can do basic knitting without even looking at what I’m doing.
Crochet, well, I never really did much with it. I crocheted my dad an afghan once and it took forever. Because I am not skilled at it and had to really look and concentrate I found it much more difficult than crochet. People in the know (those who actually KNOW how) say crochet is easier to learn and master than knitting.
If you’ve got some basic crochet skills, or are just learning, this Easy Crochet Baby Blanket tutorial from Melanie Ham looks great. Not only is it a pretty blanket and a simple pattern, but she shows you every step and clearly explains the steps.

I do both, and I used to teach both in a yarn store. Some find knitting easier, and others have an easier time with crochet. I think it has to do a) with how you think, and b) with how dominant your dominant hand is. Knitting is binary and has very few basics, but every stitch is connected to every other stitch, and knitting involves both hands pretty thoroughly. Crochet is not binary and has many basic parts, but each stitch is its own complete unit, and most of the work is confined to the dominant hand.
