Family Traditions for Christmas On the Cheap Part VI

In Part I of Family Traditions for Christmas-On the Cheap I covered why I think traditions are important and the three ways that folks come by their traditions, A-got them from their family B-consciously decided on a tradition and C-a chance occurrence or idea is repeated and become tradition. My first examples were my family’s tree trimming tradition (A & B), our ornament exchange (A) and our Advent calendar (B). In Part II I covered the Advent Wreath A&B), Part III Jesus’ Birthday Cake (A&B), Part IV Gingerbread Houses (C), Part V Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Today the Christmas Pageant and Christmas Eve Service.

The Christmas Pageant

OK, this one is pretty common (and free) (A). Growing up we always took part in our church Christmas Pageant. I have distinct memories of being a shepherd while my sister (aka Sporty RN) got to be an angel. I think I’m still scarred. (just kidding) Last year was Princess’ first attempt at participating. I say attempt, because although she really enjoyed the angel costume, she only spent about 30 seconds up front with the other angels and then wound up on my lap for the rest of the service.

This year she swore that she wanted to be an angel, then last week changed her mind and said she is going to be a sheep with her little girlfriend. We’ll see how it goes. Buddy has told me empathetically that he does NOT want to be a sheep. I guess he’ll wind up on my lap!

Christmas Eve Service

Once we were too old to participate in the pageant, we started attending the midnight service at our church. (another free event) Actually, we’d arrive the hour early for the lessons and carols (where the congregation gets to sing along with a lot of common carols) then stay for the service which ENDS at midnight, not starts. We always ended with the whole congregation lighting candles and signing silent night. I have lots of memories of that beautiful church, all lit up by candles and redolent with the scent of pine-the big organ majestically playing carols while the choir sings. . . . We intend to do the same with our kids once they are older (A).
