November Grocery Benchmark

November 22, 2011 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 5 Comments

What have the prices of groceries done this month?  Let’s see!

Remember, I use Aldi’s prices for my benchmark report–they usually offer the lowest price in my area for staple items.  Also their limited choices make it easy on me-I don’t have to price 3 different brands of sugar-they just offer theirs!

November Grocery

Lettuce                                            $1.39                       $1.39
Potatoes (per lb)                             NA                            $.29
Gr Beef (80/20, per lb)             $2.89                       $2.69
Chicken (BS Breasts, per lb)    $2.48                       $2.49
Whole Chicken (per lb)                NA                           $.75
Pinto Beans (per lb)                      NA                            $.99
Bread (white sandwich)               $.89                        $.75

********************

To be added next month:  canned tomatoes and peanut butter

It’s obvious from the prices that baking staples are being marked down for the holidays!  I’ve added a few items that were requested on last month’s benchmark report.

What have you noticed about grocery prices lately?

Well, I’ve noticed that we’re paying a heck of a lot more in the Denver, CO area than you’re paying. With the exception of ground beef and pinto beans, our prices are at least 10-20% higher than yours consistently. Buying beef has gotten especially discouraging — steak is something dreams are made of.

In central PA we are experiencing rising prices. Bread has gone from 99c to $1.09. Our milk prices are $3.30 – $4 a gallon depending on where you shop (this is just skim milk, too). Eggs are 1.79/doz. I think I’m moving in with you. 😛

I’m shocked at how inexpensive your groceries are compared to ours in the Pensacola, FL area. And I buy store brand, not name brand, for everything as well as keep a price book and watch sales closely. I’m thrilled when I can get staples as loss leaders and stock up accordingly, but even so our loss leader prices are far and above what you have listed here. And salaries are very low, if you can find a job at all. I’ve been out of work for over a year, and we live on my husband’s salary. Thank goodness we don’t have children – I don’t know how people can afford to eat these days!

Well folks my hubs is always saying “eggs are cheaper in the country”. IE–you guys are more in metro areas so they take advantage of you! Upstate NY where I am is very rural and not that affluent. According to the “City data” website in 2009 the median income for the Binghamton NY was $29,705. So I think the prices reflect that somewhat.

And do remember-if you aren’t familiar with Aldi’s-they do tend to be much cheaper along the lines of a discount store because they don’t shelve items (they are stacked in boxes-very nicely, but still just in boxes), don’t provide bags or bag your groceries, and they don’t have a lot of variety (ie when you buy canned carrots they just have their one brand of canned carrots-that’s IT)

As for anyone who wants to move here and be my neighbor-I’d love it!!!
