Quick Tip: Powdered Gatorade

January 24, 2012 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 7 Comments

I woke up this morning to find out that Princess was sick.  She stayed home from school and, well, suffice it to say that after a while I decided that she needed to rehydrate!

Now I didn’t want her just to drink plain water because she needed to replace electrolytes as well as the actual fluid.  I also didn’t want to be gone for long since she wasn’t feeling well-so that meant a trip to the more expensive local “Great American” grocery store.  (It’s about 6 aisles-and each of them is only about 200 yards long. Really)

I bought this container of Gatorade powder for just over $5.  I’m sure you could get it for less at a bigger chain store.  It makes 8 quarts of Gatorade.

Now a 16 oz bottle of Gatorade costs at LEAST a $-so for less than the price of 5 small bottles of Gatorade I got the equivalent of 16!  Not only that, but I can make a cup (8oz) at a time, so really it’s about 32 servings.

And since it’s powder, it is shelf stable, so I can just use what I need now (which is hopefully not too many glasses!) and then stick the rest in the cupboard for any future needs!

I’d say that’s the frugal way to go.

I think you mean 20 yards, not 200 yards.

V-8 or canned tomato juice is good for electrolytes too, just not as easy on an upset tummy. Many people have a lowered sodium levels and potassium from anti-depressants and other commonly prescribed medications. This is how we treat it at work, along with gatorade. I like the powdered myself and it is great to have on hand!

wow- I had no idea that it came in powered form! My son has severe reflux, so when he gets a vomiting bug it’s that much worse and he frequently ends up dehydrated. I try to always have a bottle on hand, but this is so much more economical! Thanks for the tip!

Glad this tip will work for you Lisa! I hated having to buy the bottles-we’d only use a bit of it and then throw it out. Annoying (and unfrugal!)

they also have poweraid in powder form. The hubby uses it in summer at work – factory, no air – so it gets HOT! sometimes it is really hard to find – at least by me. sometimes its by the powdered drink mixes, sometimes by the gatorade/poweraid stuff – sometimes elsewere. I dont think they know were to put it over here and the employees know even less! :-/ But I find it! 🙂

My husband plays rec hockey, and used to buy a bottle of Gatorade before every game. Now we buy the powdered Gatorade and he mixes himself 500 ml in a reusable water bottle before every game. Less waste in more than one way!
