Dear Frugal Upstate

Your recent posts on Rhubarb have me thinking. I love Anne Perry mystery books – the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt as well as the Monk series. They are set in

the 1800’s and more than once make reference to Rhubarb pickles. I have wanted to give them a try but can’t find a recipe for Rhubarb Pickles. If any one knows of such a recipe, I would love to have it!

Rita

I’ve posted about Rhubarb in general, Rhubarb Strawberry Jam and Rhubarb Fool.. .but I’ve never thought about Rhubarb pickles! You made me curious, so I did some web searching and found some interesting looking recipes.

Pickled Rhubarb~MotherEarth News

Johnny Iuzzini’s Rhubarb Pickles~NY Magazine

Rhubarb Pickles-Martha Stewart

They are all pretty similar, but I think I am going to try the MotherEarth News version-the problem is, they have to sit for a minimum of 30days, so by the time I’m able to give you an opinion on them, it will be too late to buy or pick rhubarb.

So readers, have any of you had Rhubarb pickles? What do you eat them with? Can you help Rita out with a favorite recipe that you could share? Do tell all!

Thank you, Jenn. I am finally able to check in…our phone line was struck by lightning in the wee hrs. of May 27th and we lost 2 phones and our computer! I’m going to try out at least one of these recipes while I still have some rhubarb. I didn’t realize that they were a refrigerator pickle. That’s good. Last year I had an over abundance of eggplant and made marinated eggplant. That just stays in glass jars in the refrigerator. It was to die for!

In the books, the pickles were eaten in a Pub with bread, cheese and cider.
