September Grocery Price Benchmark Report

September 24, 2011 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 8 Comments

Last month I decided to start keeping track of a few key grocery ingredients and see what happens to the prices over time.  Each month somewhere around the middle of the month I will be posting the prices and show the change (if any) from the previous month.

All items were priced at Aldi’s–which is the lowest priced grocery chain in my area.

September Grocery

Price Benchmark

Item                                       Aug 2011    Sep 2011
Sugar (5lbs)                                $2.69          $2.69
Flour (white, 5lbs)                   $1.69          $1.65
Milk (2%, Gallon)                      $2.15          $2.15
Eggs (Lrg, 1doz)                        $1.25          $1.55
Butter (1lb)                                 $2.39          $2.39
Tuna (chunk light, 5oz)         $0.55          $0.55
Lettuce                                         $1.29          $1.29
Gr Beef (80/20, per lb)          $2.79         $2.79
Chicken (BS Breasts, per lb) $2.49    $2.49
Bread (white sandwich)          $0.79    $0.79

********************

Prices on these staples have remained pretty much constant since last month-the notable exception being a $0.30 increase in the price of eggs

Just for fun I also decided to double check the prices this month against those at Walmart.  It was interesting to note that there was between a $.20-$.40 increase in price on all items when shopping at Walmart.  Of course the variety is much, much better there.

Interesting-here in CT prices at Aldi are pretty much the same except milk. Milk is $2.69 here and eggs are a little cheaper.

I just paid $2.79 for butter, Metro-Atlanta GA….remember when butter was $2.00, those were the days!

Very interesting. I always assumed Walmart was cheaper. Since we also have an Aldi, and it’s smaller and easier to get around for my senior mom, I’ll have to take her over there to check it out. Thanks for the info.

Remember-you have to bring a quarter for the cart and they don’t provide bags–you either buy there or bring your own and then pack your own bags on the table. . .

Thanks for all your posts. Wondering if you all buy meat/chicken, etc from Aldi’s? If yes, what do you buy? Anything to look out for?

I’m a new Aldi’s shopper so I’m curious about the meat. Love the store, and although our Aldi’s is small, I start there and then pick up the rest at the grocery store or Walmart across the street.

    Thanks again!

No, I don’t buy any meats at Aldis, however their frozen breaded fish is better then the name brands! I now buy all my staples, baking goods, dairy, fruits & veg (fresh, frozen canned). The only draw back is they don’t take credit cards, so making sure I have cash on hand (hesitent to use debit card). I used to buy all these items at WalMart, they are significantly cheaper at Aldis; I find I am buying less and less at WalMart.

I used to think Walmart was always cheaper, until I started checking prices elsewhere. I made a pricebook and would match 5 to 10 items each grocery trip. Aldi’s and a small hometown grocer consistently beat Walmart.

      HEllo All,
I still reuse my Aldi’s bags I bought probably two years ago. I reuse them at other grocery stores and various other uses. If you are in a jam they do cost money but they are sturdy for other uses. I always tried to get the paper bags, mainy for cat ltter disposale. THe paper bags when I can get them are not as sturdy as those were. Really miss Aldi’s, I still write them monthly to try to ge them to AZ.
