Here’s another fun project I got to do for Walmart recently. They’ve updated and revamped their party assortments and wanted to let everyone know about it, so I got to shop the department to put together a party!
I just love how the paper goods section looks all coordinated by color. It’s like a rainbow! Now let’s all be honest here-when you think of buying inexpensive colored disposable party-wear, where do you think of first.
Yeah–me too. I always went to the dollar store for that stuff. But you know what? Walmart must have known that too, because all of the colored party-ware rings in at $.97!
Even the cute theme stuff costs $.97 a package–but if you are having a crowd over I suggest you get the plain solid ones, you get twice as many plates in the pack for that $.97.
Now it’s the wrong time of year for my kids birthdays, but I’m a frugal gal, so I decided I would shop for Princess’s party and just save the stuff until the spring!
While they did have a lot of girly theme stuff some of it was obviously for younger kids–Princess is now 10 and very adult. . . just ask her! When I saw the peace symbol stuff in teal and pink though, I knew it would be a winner! There is another whole section with the treat bags, also $.97. I chose to “upgrade” myself a bit and get the cool pink “chinese food” style boxes. Those were a pricey $1.50 (note the sarcasm?)
Another thing Walmart has done is to put all their “goody bag” stuff in a central area, which is great! They have these new favor packs for a very reasonable $6.47 that have everything you need to make a goody bag or fill a pinata for 8 kids. Folks, you could even send the husband to the store for this one and not have him mess it up. They come in themes for girls, boys, and general. The one shown below is their “Rocker Princess” set.
If you like a bit more control over what goes into the goody bags, or you have some older kiddos, they have this wall full of bins with tons of goodies ranging from that $.97 price point up to about $2.97. And while some of it is that general it will get lost the next day and break type stuff, there was some really uber cute things in there too. I especially liked the crafty type stuff, like the really nice fine glitter 4 pk for $.97, or the pack of 8 mini nail polishes for $2.97
So for Princess’s Birthday party I bought the following items:
I picked up the theme invitations ($.97), but wanted to jazz them up a bit, so I also grabbed the stick on jewels for $.97 and popped a few on there for some bling.
As I mentioned, I picked up those cute pink “chinese takeout” style boxes for the goody bags-so a pack of $.97 theme stickers brought that up to snuff as well.
Now I admit to getting fancy for the favors. Princess is all about the fashion and the jewelery, so instead of buying a bunch of little items I decided to spend my money on jewelry making supplies to whip up some cute necklaces that all the girls would enjoy.
That was actually the most expensive part of the whole party! I spent about $9 on those supplies–but that is making necklaces for 6 girls with a ton of findings, beads and wire left over. Who knows, maybe I’ll get all jazzed up and make them some earrings to go with as well.
So each girl will get a decorated gift box, a peace symbol necklace, a glow in the dark drinking straw (that’s the thing on the right-you break the capsule like a lightstick and they glow!) and a bottle of nail polish.
Hmmm. I bet I could even make a peace symbol cake to go with the whole party. Something like this one at Dad Baker.

Great ideas ! My daughter is getting to this stage, she is in 2nd grade and ready for “no more baby parties” I think a jewelry party might be a good choice and $9 to make 6 cute necklaces (with leftovers) is a great price!

If you are going to have the kids do the jewelry I’d suggest buying the spiral memory wire that you can just cut into sections with 2 or 3 loops & crimp, loop or glue an end bead on the end before they start. Then you provide an assortment of beads & charms & they can string them on. . . you do the final crimp/bead for them and they have a bracelet. This video gives you the basics (although I find the lady’s voice vaguely irritating) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hyz8aIYsHuI

That party is going to be terrific- just the thing for a bigger girlie. I will have to look at Walmart.com for party goods since we’re in the UK!
