So I’ve finished up my first week of the Walmart/Seventh Generation Sustainability Challenge! Actually-I finished it up on Labor day and have started week 2 already-but I’m just getting the video up for you all to see.
You remember that my goal for week 1 was to be more sustainable/green by using less electricity in our home. Check out my video blog to hear about the results:
For week 3 I challenged myself to make the environment inside my home more healthy & sustainable-specifically to make the air we breathe more natural and healthful. I chose this goal because of a conversation I was involved in with Jeffery Hollander-the Co-Founder of Seventh Generation. He said one of the reasons they started Seventh Generation was to create products that didn’t fill the air in our homes with toxic chemicals. (that’s a paraphrase folks).
Watch the video, then answer this question: What ways you can think of to improve the environment within our homes?
Join me, along with my fellow Walmart Moms, Sheena of Sophistishe, Jennae of Green Your Décor, Monica of MommyBrain Reports and Denise of Wholesome Mommy, on our four week journey to live a more sustainable lifestyle in the Seventh Generation/Walmart sustainability challenge.
*Disclosure: I am a participant in the Walmart Moms program. Seventh Generation has provided me with products. Walmart has provided me with compensation to blog about attempting a more sustainable household for a month. Participation in this program is voluntary. All opinions are my own.

Hi Jenn,
I have ceramic tile floors in my new home, the method in which we clean the flooring is with a steam mop. I do not use anything but water with the cleaner, so i am not contributing to extra chemicals in the air. I use an trigger pump spray for freshening the air in the bathrooms but my husband will open a jar of pickle brine and leave it for a half hour or so, the vinegar neutralizers the odor in a bathroom with out contaminating the air in your house with sprays. I reside in Phoenix, Arizona now, so the A/c is a must, I change the filters routinely every 4 weeks to clean the air quaility optimal and the A/C working properly. These were my suggestions, I am a fellow migraine suffere and try to limit any type of frangrance or sprays whenever possible and I use baking soda and homemade cleaning supplies to clean with. Have a great weekend.

check out this book from the library: How to grow Fresh air. It is about the plants the cleant he air the most, and many are common and easy to grow house plants.
Amyrlin-Using a steam mop (or a hand held steam cleaner) is a great way to clean without adding chemicals! Great suggestion. Also, I’ve used coffee grounds, baking soda & vinegar (not together, separately at various times) to deoderize my microwave, garbage disposal or fridge-I never considered it for the “funky boy smell” in the bathroom-what a good tip.
Evelyn-Houseplants are a great idea. I know that there are particular house plants that are supposed to be best for filtering the air-I’ll have to look those up. I do have a couple of plants in the house, but I should add more. . .
