Multipling Your Harvest: Additional Cabbage heads

Do you grow cabbage in your garden? Well remember how last week I told you that you could multiply your broccoli production by harvesting side shoots?  I’ve got another neat little trick to get more out of your cabbage!

Once you’ve harvested your head of cabbage (I like growing these meal sized “Mini Gonzales” cabbages). . .

Just take a knife and cut an X through the stalk where you cut the head off!  That’s it!  Initially it will just seem to sprout some loose leaves, but leave it alone and eventually it will form some miniature cabbage heads!

See the four miniature heads?  They are larger than a brussel sprout, but much smaller than a head of cabbage.

See, the actual “head” is pretty small.  But unless you were planning on pulling the cabbage and planting something else in the space, why NOT cut a cross and let the mini heads form-you really don’t have to do any work and it’s extra food!

Thank you for the excellent tip.

Do you make sauerkraut? The CSA that I’m a member of has been very generous with cabbage this summer, and I suspect there may be more to come during the fall.
