All about my Airfare.

So, I am back!

I am in Dallas visiting my sister for a week-She has a son, 3 and a newborn daughter that I just HAD to meet 🙂

As I said before, it had been a busy week. My mom came up from Long Island on Thursday to visit the kids and see my play. My play (a small musical that noone has ever heard of called “Blame it on the Movies”) had a rough opening night, but was good by the second performance. It was a sort of conglomeration of music from various movies. The cast was only 8 folks, and the 1 ½ hour show was solid music, so it was a lot of work. It was the first show I had done with the group, and I met a lot of really nice people.

Then I had to prepare to fly down here-I had already arranged for the kiddos to be in daycare while I was gone, but I needed to do all that mom stuff. You know-making sure that the laundry was done and their were easy dad proof groceries in the house so he wouldn’t just order takeout every night I was gone.

Then on Sunday afternoon I rode with my mom back down to Long Island so I could catch a flight out of there at 6am.

Now you may wonder why I was flying out of NY city. Well-because it was more frugal of course! When I was looking on Orbitz for a flight I tried all the combinations I could think of for times and airports. I was willing not only to fly out of Binghamton (the closest city to me) but also from Ithaca, Syracuse or Scranton PA. The cheapest price I could find round trips over $450. But I noticed that there were several flights offered that originated in Syracuse and landed in Scranton on the way back that were much cheaper. That wouldn’t work for me because I was going to drive myself to the airport and if the car was in Syracuse how would I get home from Scranton?

Suddenly I had an out of the box brain flash! Since my mom was driving back to Long Island on Sunday, what if I flew out from there and flew back into our local airport in Binghamton. Bingo! I found a flight for $289!!

Frugal Moral: Don’t be afraid to think outside the box to save money.

Not sure how close to Islip you are, but a flight out of Islip/McArthur airport is so much nicer than LaGuardia, and really not that big a difference cost wise. My own experience is a flight to Columbus, Ohio. The only drawback was having to layover in Baltimore for 2 hours, but that was a fair trade off to avoid NYC traffic.

I love the comment about dad proof groceries. You know we men live to find excuses to order food… if there aren’t any excuses then we’ll simply eat two meals at a time so there won’t be enough later on!

FH-My mom lives right near Islip-but the flight from LGA came up cheaper.

Canadian Veggie-Hey-I know how men deal with food 🙂
