Blueberry Rake

July 28, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 16 Comments

Since Stephanie asked, this is a blueberry rake. It only works on the lowbush, wild type blueberries, not on the highbush. And it costs about $40 for a cheaper, smaller one. But since it took me 3 hours to pick 4 cups, and this thing can pick that much in probably 10 minutes or so when the berries are ripe, and also because I have a free source of as many blueberries as I want if I could just pick them (and right now about 60% of them don’t get picked) I figure it would be worth it.

That is a cool tool! Well worth the price. I’d buy one now if I had some bushes to use it on!

Wow, it looks interesting, and fun, too! I planted two blueberry bushes but I’m not sure I’ll ever actually see fruit on them, LOL!

    I had wondered also.

We have planted a few blueberry bushes, but the harvest is so sparse I am not very hopeful …

But, in your case, I say “go for it!”

    What an interesting tool.

Since you have free access to the berries seems like a good investment for this year and next year and next year, etc.

I think we actually have “huckleberries” at the friend’s property – at least that’s what my Granny used to call them – either way, I call ’em Yummy!

I remember when young and all my friends spent the summers “raking blueberries”…. mom wouldn’t let me because she said it was “back breaking work”. I remember being so upset…. I just wanted a ‘cool’ job like all my friends.

Now I can’t imagine the torture of spending hours and hours bent over raking blueberries. How is it that mom was RIGHT!??!

I had never used a rake before until today. I was looking to get 15 lbs of blueberries to make wine with. A friend with a rake came along and we were able to pick 30lbs in about an hour. I will never be able to hand pick again!

Amanda-funny how parents turn out to be smarter than we thought. . .

Yeah, it looks like a pretty nifty gadget. And even though It will probably cost me about $50, and is really a want rather than a need, I probably will pick one up for next year-especially since the source of berries is totally free.

We should mention that we know that the blueberry rake works on low bush berries. I am not sure it works on high bush blueberries.

Ibones-I’m pretty sure you are right and the rake is just for the low bush type.

That is super slick! I have never heard of them before. I don’t know of any wild blueberries anywhere around me.

I in fact purchased mine from Hubbard rakes. There are only a few places that make them, and being originally from Maine I had to go with Hubbard. You can’t order online, you have to write a check and send it in (unless they’ve updated their website since last year.)
