Coffee Hour

August 17, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 4 Comments

Well, it’s the Frugal Upstate Family’s turn to host coffee hour at church this Sunday.

Of course, I want to do this frugally. So far I whipped up two different kinds of dough in my bread machine-Onion cheese bread which I added bacon bits to and made little tiny rolls out of, and pumpernickle-which I made into two very dense round loaves. Actually I think the pumpernickle finally killed my ailing machine-it didn’t finish mixing it up, and I had to scrape the whole mess out of the hopper, mix it, then knead some wheat flour into it to get it to something approximating bread 🙂

I also took a bunch of apples I had that were starting to get mealy, peeled them, diced them and cooked them with some pumpkin pie spice, sugar, and water on the stove. I’m going to buy some phyllo dough today at Aldis and make some apple pie squares.

So the complete coffee hour menu will be:

Onion Cheese rolls
Pumpernickle bread
Butter
Apple pie squares
Hummus (bought the chick peas at Aldis during their mexican Cinco d’Mayo week)
Toasted pita bread triangles (today at Aldis)
Cubed cheese and crackers (crackers on hand, cheese today at Aldis)

I could probably do this even cheaper, but there is a time element involved this week, so I decided to go with the store bought phyllo rather than homemade piecrust, and buying pita bread rather than making my pizza crust crackers.

Anyway, I also need to cook DH’s belated birthday dinner and cherry pie for tonight and bring some refreshments to a 930 meeting on Saturday. A woman only has so much time!

BTW, interested in making Hummus? or Even wondering what it is? I’ll tell you tomorrow 🙂

I tried hummus once and I thought it was horrid, but my daughter made me try a different kind and it wasn’t too bad. But it wouldn’t compete with lobster, LOL! Hey, happy belated birthday to your husband! What’s his dinner going to be? Your breakfast menu sure sounds good!

I love hummus! Aldi has pita bread? I haven’t seen it at ours!

M2F-Well, to each their own. My MIL always says that if everyone liked the same things the world would be a boring place.

Stephanie-Actually, I thought they did, but it turned out they didn’t. They also no longer carry pie crust. Luckily I was heading over to Walmart after anyway (I always go to Aldi’s first, bring a cooler for the cold stuff, then hit the more expensive places for other things) So I picked up the pie crust. Totally forgot the pita bread and was going to do without, but stopped at the Asian Grocery right on the same road for some bulgogi sauce/marinade–and they had whole wheat pocketless pitas for $1.99 for a big pack of 8. So I nabbed them.

I have only been able to find pie crust around the holidays at Aldi. It is usually around Thanksgiving & Christmas that they carry this. I did notice though that they are carrying dough in the frozen section (bread dough).

I get my pitas over at Walmart. I think that the price is comparable though to your find at the Asian grocery store.

Your meal sounds delish. Where do you worship at? We will have to visit your church- ha! 🙂
