Drivers Saftey Class

Note: This is a European race car-but it has the right name!

So how can a blogger turn a 6 hour Saturday class on drivers safety into a post on frugality? Well, watch and be amazed!

To start with, the class is offered at a discount by the union at Yankee Bill’s state job. So it only cost me $18 to attend, and once I have the certificate in my hot little hand (in approx 2 months) we will get 10% off of our car insurance. Ditto for YB taking the same course a month or so ago. So that’s a quick easy way to save some money-pretty frugal!

There were also some neat free websites and resources we were told about.

Purchasing a new (or new to you) car? SaferCar.gov is a cool site where you can look up the government safety ratings on vehicles and even compare between two different ones. You can also read up on drivers safety and find out about defects and recalls.

Frugality is not only about getting things for the best price, but also about keeping what you have in good condition so that it lasts longer. The Car Care website (sponsored by the Care Care Council) can help you with that. It teaches about how a vehicle works, and how to care for it. There are sections on each part of the car that describe what it is, how it works and gives you recommended routine maintenance. There are also sections on preparing for a road trip, service schedules, and collision repair.

Even better, you can click on the “car care guide” link on the right menu and order your free copy of the Car Care Guide (in English, French, Spanish or even metric!). The instructor had a copy of this reference and highly recommended everyone get one. I’ve already ordered my free copy!

Lastly, you don’t have to be from New York to appreciate the Kids Traffic Safety page on the Safe New York site. There is all sorts of information and fun pages for kids, as well as links to other interesting kids safety pages (not necessarily on traffic safety and not necessarily from NY).

There you go-frugal goodness pulled out of my 6 hours of boredom 🙂

Great post! I would love to save 10% off of my car insurance. $18.00 is a small price to pay (and of course, your time) for 10% off of approx. $1000.

Sharon-call your insurance and ask if there are any classes that would reduce it, and ask if they know anywhere to take them. You never know!
