Festival of Frugality # 55 (Happy New Year!)

January 3, 2007 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 1 Comment

Well, still not quite on the ball for 07 yet, but obviously Binary Dollar is! He’s on track with the first Festival of Frugality of 2007, posted on time yesterday, unlike my roundup! There were 23 entries-yours truly didn’t submit. I need to get on the ball with that as well, it’s been months since I’ve remembered to put anything in! Binary broke the festival down into four sections: “Editors Choice” “The Frugality Posts” “The Consumer Reports” and “The Frugal Mentality”.

All of them were worth reading, but here were my two favorites.

What can I do today to make me rich in the future? (at The Simple Dollar) I already do several of the things he mentions, like numbers 1, 2, 7,& 10. I need to look at the open source computer programs he mentions in #6 more carefully-I already use Open Office (which is free) for their free version of “powerpoint” which is great, but he mentions a free version of Adobe, which I need to look into. . . .

If you bought a gift for anyone through Amazon.com this Christmas season, you may be interested in Become an Amazon Price Drop Ninja. FiveCent Nickle tells you how you can sign up to have Amazon email you automatically if the price drops on something that you already purchased so that you can send in for a return/refund! Sounds like a bargain and a half to me!!

I like Simple Dollar’s suggestion of a grocery list. I would never shop without one unless I was just picking up a few basics. One thing it does is to make sure I have all I need for dinner any night. I’m sure you’d agree that knowing what you’re making takes off a lot of stress! I’d add something to the list: work on having a well-stocked pantry. It goes with the grocery list. Buy more than one of something you use often, when it is on sale, and it will be there waiting for you in the pantry when you need it! Example: I won’t pay 4 bucks for a jar of mayo. So when it’s on sale for 1.99 (and less with a coupon!), I’ll buy at least 2, sometimes 4. When one jar runs out…instead of paying that four bucks…I just reach into my pantry.
This is a long reply to something you wrote a few days ago, LOL!
