Giveaway: Maybelline Define-A-Lash Pulse Perfection

May 16, 2009 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate

Lately people keep offering to send me stuff.

For years, no-one offered me anything. I guess when you run a blog dedicated to telling folks not to buy things, it doesn’t make you really appealing to the marketing/PR crowd. But now that I’ve been “found” I’ve got offers coming out my ears. At first I wasn’t sure what to do. Obviously I don’t encourage rampant consumerism. But the more I thought about it, the more I felt that offering you all the chance to have something for nothing was a *good* thing.

It’s kind of nice, kind of fun when I get to give something away to you all-maybe something that you wouldn’t have spent the money to buy yourself. Today is one of those little things. Maybelline offered all the Walmart Elevenmoms the opportunity to try their brand new “geeky” mascara, Define-A-Lash Pulse Perfection. I also have 2 more to give away.

I know it sounds weird to say that a mascara is “geeky”-but I swear, this one is! It’s got a motor in it! No, really, it’s a vibrating mascara. That’s the “Pulse Perfection” part. You press the little button and it vibrates. I wasn’t sure what the draw of the vibration was-but a friend who is much more into makeup than I* told me that many women do a little “wiggle” when they apply their mascara. The vibration is to replicate that. Apparently this is the latest and greatest in mascara technology (yeah-I do have to giggle typing that!). Lancome, Estee Lauder and Perscriptives have all created vibrating mascaras in the last year or so.

Maybelline’s Define-A-Lash Pulse Perfection mascara runs about $12, and will be available only at Walmart. This is a “win it before you can buy it” opportunity-it won’t hit the shelves until the 18th.

As far as frugality goes, I buy mascara so infrequently that I can’t even remember how much I paid for my last tube. I think it was “Jane” mascara-they are a value brand but unfortunately are going out of business šŸ™ According to a fashion article I read at FabSugarUK Maybelline’s vibrating mascara is 1/3 the price of the other available brands, so you can look at that as a good value.

Before posting this giveaway I wanted to do a full trial of the mascara and give you my opinion, so I’ve been wearing it for about a week and a half now. It definitely is a dramatic mascara-it may be too dark and thick for you if you like a very light, natural look.

Personally I find that a very light, quick application works best-the vibration is so good at applying the makeup that you can get an unpleasant caked look if you do a very slow sweep. I also preferred to press the vibrating button after I had touched the brush to my lashes-otherwise it tickled too much! Then again, I’m pretty ticklish, so that may not be an issue for everyone.

This mascara is not waterproof. I prefer waterproof mascara because I have a very bad habit of not removing my makeup for bed (I know, I know. Bad, bad Jenn). Waterproof mascara tends to hold up to that abuse a tad bit better, but since this is not I woke up with flakes and smudges every morning. Of course if I had actually removed it like a good girl that would not have been an issue.

Now that you have my opinion, on to the giveaway!

This is a sort one folks, just Saturday and Sunday with the winner being announced on Monday! So hurry up and get your entry in.

I’m keeping this quick and simple. Three ways to enter-your email address must be included in each one.

#1-Leave a comment with your best frugal beauty tip.
#2-Tweet about the contest, come back and leave a comment letting me know.
#3-Post on Facebook about the contest, come back and leave a comment letting me know.

Contest closes at midnight on May 17th. Good luck!

*Heather from The Domestic Diva. Now don’t get me wrong, I like and wear makeup! I just tend to find something that works for me and stick with it rather than trying the latest and greatest.

I buy makeup from ELF to save money because their makeup is so cheap. They even have mineral makeup too which is great. Thanks. abailey_crace@yahoo.com

Makeupalley.com is a site that lets people review cosmetic products (makeup, hair stuff, you name it). My frugal tip is to check out the reviews before you try something new, so that you have a better chance of ending up with a product you like. Also, wet n’ wild eyeshadows (the ones that come in small round pots) are wicked value for money. Great pigment, long lasting, and you can apply wet or dry.

The whole concept of electronic makeup makes me giggle.

As for my beauty tip, I buy cheap shampoo and then splurge on the pricier conditioner. My hair is very frizzy and if use the cheap conditioner I end up with dry, damaged hair. But to me, the shampoo I use makes no real difference. So instead of wasting money on matching shampoo and conditioner I buy the cheap shampoo and mix it with an expensive conditioner.

I buy eyeliner and mascara only – and I only buy them if they are cheap or free at walgreens. I stock up when I get a good deal, thanks!

Frugal Tip: Cheap baby shampoo works wonders on stripping the build up from your hair. It also cleans the soap scum from your bath tub.

I use vasoline to remove eye makeup–just wipe it off with a warm wet washcloth. It removes mascara and eyeliner and leaves the eye area soft.

I use olive oil for moisturizer a couple of times a week and then regular moisturizer the rest of the time. Seems to really help my dry skin.

frugal tip – only buy what you really want (even if it costs more) – cheaper to buy 1 item that you’ll use than to have a pile of stuff that you don’t use.

Scrubbing with your favorite soap on a washcloth does the same job exfoliating your skin as those expensive exfoliating products.

My Best Frugal Beauty Tip is…
YOU do NOT need EXPENSIVE Makeup!
If YOU Happen to LOVE an expensive say LIPSTICK, that’s fine, use that with your bargain Blush and foundation and other cosmetics… chances are they are made by the same cosmetics company..

BUT.. don’t keep your mascara for more than 3 months.. that is NOT saving YOU $$.. toss them and buy a new one.. it is NOT worth an eye infection.

Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish!
    know what I mean??

My favorite frugal beauty tip is Vaseline as a moisturizer and eye makeup remover. Just a little bit does the job, doesn’t make me greasy and I’ve found it works as good if not better than expensive moisturizers. During the day I put an inexpensive moisturizer with SPF on over the top.

Frugal beauty tip: get free stuff like through samples and contests:D

I’m usually not huge into samples because of the packaging waste, but makeup samples usually last me a long time and I like it when I can get them directly from a makeup counter without a lot of excess packaging. I still have mascara and lip gloss samples I’m going through. I wish I could buy stuff in those small sizes (at a low price, of course) because I never get through the larger sizes before having to toss them out. Heck, I don’t even get through the sample sizes many times! And that brings me to another frugal beauty tip — unless you know you’re going to use it all, don’t bother paying even slightly more to get a large size thinking that it’s a deal.

Email is my first name at my blog: AllAboutAppearances.info.

Try the skin care products and makeup from Aldi’s – Lacura brand. It’s really good quality at a huge saving. My current faves are the lip balm and daily facial cleanser.

Each night, I put scotch tape between my eyebrows (on the spot above my nose) to make muscles there relax so the lines don’t get deeper. It seems to work.

Years of working in the beauty shop, I found a few things that will help the do it yourselfer’s at home. 1. When you use a lot of product in your hair such as hair spray or mousse, it will eventually put a cakey build up on your hair strands. Keep a bottle in your shower of water with baking soda dissolved in it. Work this in those build up areas, and it will dissolve it right away. Also in another bottle if you combine vinegar and water, aprx 4:1 ratio. Work this through your hair after you have washed and conditioned your hair . It wont hurt if you use it frequently , but once a week is plenty. This helps balance the PH of your hair and will make it shiny. As will a cool water rinse after conditioning. This closes down the follicles on the hair shaft making your hair stronger and less prone to damage from brushing or combing out wet hair.
