Giveaway: Rubbermaid Containers!

June 17, 2009 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 234 Comments

This week, thanks to the kind folks at Rubbermaid, I am giving away a 20 piece set of food storage containers.

I thought this was a great fit for Frugal Upstate-after all, one of the big ways I advocate saving money is by cooking at home. When you cook at home, you always have plenty of uses for storage containers.  You need places to marinate things, to keep prepped food, and of course to place leftovers!

I received the exact set of containers that I am giving away to test and review myself.  That was over a month ago-I really wanted to take the time to use them, store them, throw them in the dishwasher~I wanted to put them through all the trials and tribulations that they would go through in a normal house!  About the only thing that I didn’t do was freeze in them-but I prefer to freeze things in zippered baggies so I can squeeze out all the air possible.*

The set of 10 pieces (which is really 10 because they count lids and bottoms separately) is a variety pack of sorts.  Inside are:

Two Produce Savers, Three Lock-It’s (my favorite-they just seem so secure!), Three Easy Find Lids, and two Premier.

I liked these containers.  First of all, they were just so new and pretty! All of my other containers, which function fine, are stained and cloudy looking.  But of course looks can be a transient state–so the question is, how did they function?

One of the things I really liked about these products was that all the bases & lids were interchangeable.  Well, of course the smallest lids don’t fit on the big containers-but the lids are exactly the same size for the deep and the shallower ones.  The deep and the shallow ones all stack nicely together, and you can interchange the bottoms with any style of the tops. It is very convenient.

The Easy lid feature is cool too. Basically, all the lids lock together, and then lock into place on the bottom of the container itself:

The only improvement I would suggest to the Rubbermaid team is to find a way to make all the different kinds of lids attach to each other. With 4 different types of lids in the cupboard I wind up with 4 different stacks.  Of course they all stack with their own kind, and they don’t fall out of the cupboard every time I open it!  Honestly though, if I were to buy any additional containers, I would pick just one type and purchase those so my entire set would stack in the smallest space.

I gave these containers the full run through in the last month or so. They’ve gone from fridge to microwave to dishwasher with no staining, warping or cloudiness.

Now on to the contest:

Giveaway is from June 17th to midnight EST June 19th.

The winner will be posted on Jun 20th.

You have 4 opportunities to enter. Each entry must be a separate comment.

Ways to enter:

#1-Comment on this post.  Just for fun, why don’t you tell me what you plan to put in the containers if you win.

#2-Subscribe to Frugal Upstate then come back and leave me a comment telling me so. If you already subscribe just tell me that.

#3-If you use twitter, Tweet about the contest using this link (http://budurl.com/65t2), then come back and leave a comment telling me.

#4-If you use Facebook, post a comment there about the contest with this link (http://budurl.com/65t2)(, then come back and tell me.

The winner will be drawn using the random number generator.  Good Luck!

*note: Air is what causes freezer burn, which is why things that are vacuum sealed don’t get freezer burn. For a poor mans ghetto vacuum sealer, place items in a zippered bag, slip a drinking straw in and seal all around it. Then suck the air out manually and quickly pull the straw out while zippering up. . . viola!

I would use them to store slow-cooked meals to defrost when my hubby is on the road. Quick and easy meals when I’m on my own with my kiddo.

we cook from home the majority of the time so we use these containers very often for leftovers. my husband takes his lunch to work with them too. i’m excited to try them because our old ones are stained and warped from all the use.

I’d totally store all my leftovers in them. Between my son taking lunch to school, and my 3 brothers coming over for dinner and taking leftovers home, I’m down to maybe 3 pieces of tupperware and old chinese food containers.. I tell them constantly to return my pieces all to no avail .. Oh well, maybe no more goodies sent home until they return. Good luck to everyone!

Other than the normal daily leftovers (because I rarely make a meal that gets all eaten) I’d make so chili. 🙂

    Thanks for the giveaway.

Are these made of the harder plastic that does not impart a “plasticky” smell to food?

This would be amazing to add to our ever growing collection of rubbermaid! I would use the small containers to put my husbands lunch sides in, the mediums would be used for homemade ice cream and the larger ones would be used for I don’t know what yet. I did check that site; if you are no longer going to update it, you might want to put a note to that effect as a sticky at the top. I checked this URL because I heard you mention it at one point on Frugal Coast2Coast.)

I’ve been trying to batch cook beans, and I prefer to store individual containers instead of one giant pot, so these containers would be perfect.
