I don’t have a problem with caffine. . . .

July 31, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 4 Comments

I have a problem without it!

HA! There is a really cute sign at the shop that says that. 🙂

Those of you who’ve been reading for a while will remember that I gave up caffine for lent. Although I’ve been drinking it again, I’ve not been having it in anywhere as near a great quantity as before. I just figure it can’t be good for my migraines.

Part of what we do is drink Half-Caf coffee. DH and I have been doing this for about 3 years now.

Yes, you can buy Folgers and Maxwell House light, but you can also mix your own! Check your unit prices carefully-sometimes with a coupon buying the real “half caffine” stuff can be cheaper, but for the most part buying a cheap regular coffee and a cheap decaf (although decaf is normally more expensive than regular anyway) and mixing them together is the least expensive option.

To do the math, just take the unit price of the decaf and the regular, add them together and then divide by two. Then check that price up against the unit price for the storebought “lite”. Of course, this only works if they are all using the same unit prices-but most coffee does. Just don’t compare beans to ground or you’ll come out all wonky.

So there you go, half caf coffee on the cheap (er).

The only bummer with decaf and migranes is that it might be the caffeine helping to cause the migranes, or it might be any of the many other things in coffee, or even the solvents used to decaffeinate the coffee. Total bummer all around.

Did you actually say “cheap coffee” – uh, what family did you come from??? I have to suffer through cheap coffee at work, dining establishments etc.. at home it is GOOD coffee only 😉 yes, not frugal but give me my Lion Kona Coffee and I am a happy girl.

I do the half caff too. I buy them both at Aldi. The decaf is in the cheap brand category, but their better coffee is really good. I like the French Roast. And it is still cheaper than other brands. Mixed together it still tastes good. Ok I admit some times when I am feeling wild I just go full caffeine! 🙂

That’s what they do in coffeeshops (mix regular and decaf beans) to get half-caff.
If you want to improve the coffee taste but make it less strong, then try grinding the beans just before brewing instead of buying pre-ground.
