Is Anyone Reading the Lunchbox Report?

July 26, 2007 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 6 Comments

I keep forgetting to update the Lunchbox Report in the right sidebar. The “Breakfast Snack” and “Lunch” portion are on hiatus for the summer, so there is no data to enter for those. Our typical summer breakfasts include:

Yogurt (Aldi’s or Save a Lot brand~about $.33 each)
Fried Egg
Cereal (Store brand or bought at the dollar store) with colored sprinkles instead of sugar (more fun than plain sugar and a compensation for not getting Lucky Charms or whatever else they begged for but I said was too unhealthy)
Homemade pancakes or Waffles (pre-made on a Sat and then flash frozen, thawed in the microwave and with real maple syrup to dip)
Bagel with Cream Cheese (both Aldi’s or Save a Lot brand, and only every few weeks when I buy them)

Lunches are very varied. We do a lot of soup and/or sandwiches, leftovers, etc.

The only part I really should be updating is the Dinner Menu portion of the Lunchbox Report–and if anyone really wants to see on a regular basis what we are doing/have planned for dinner I’ll start being more faithful about it. But if absolutely no-one cares, then I’m going to go with my summer plan of “less stress” and not worry about it.

So post in the comments and let me know-no posts mean the official hiatus of the Dinner Menu for the rest of the summer.

Well, my kids are too old for me to get anything from the report. But I have to tell you…sprinkles on store-brand cereal is brilliant! Wish I had known that one years ago.

What about Lunchables on busy days?? Some of the dollar stores are now carrying those with Capri sun and a full course lunch. It is a good deal but, should not be eaten every time due to sodium content so,I am told. Annette Thanks for the good sound advice.

I enjoy it … but if you’re going for “less stress”, then by all means suspend it until fall. :o)

By the way, can you explain how you “flash freeze”? As I understand the concept, that is to quickly and individually freeze something, but I didn’t know you could do it at home!

M2F-Thanks! I’m glad you like the idea.

FHP-I will definitely start the Lunchbox Report back up in the fall-but due to the rather underwhelming response on the Dinner Menu, I think that I’ll put it on Haitus for the summer.

Annette-I really haven’t priced lunchables, but I think that I can probably do better on price with Aldi’s brand stuff. . . plus as you pointed out, their nutrient content is suspect 🙂

Theresa-The flash freezing I do is different than industrial flash freezing. I just put the item to be frozen on a cookie sheet, without them touching, and freeze until hard. Then the items can be placed all in a bag together without worry of them sticking together. For example, if you freeze a bag full of blueberries, they will turn into a solid block of blueberries. If you freeze them on a cookie sheet first, then when you place them in a baggie-they stay separate, so you can just pull out a few berries at a time.
